The sympathetic strength induced In alt the active issues by the action nf
tho Steel directors was taken advantage nf by bankers rnntrollng some of the
recent arrivals of foreign stocks, and sales for foreign account were effective
In causing declines in Krlc. New York Central, I'nlon l'aclflc and a number of
others. This selling nlso was exhausted long before the end of the llrst hour,
and nt the same time a movement to lliiuldnto speculative holdings, always In
cvldenco after the publication of good news, hnd run its course.
Tho afternoon trading reflected the Influence of the heavy liquidation
and pressure of both long and short stock which marked the opening trading.
The most Important feature, however, was tho continued absence of speculative-
buying, which made offerings of stocks quickly effective In establishing
lower prices, and declines were In order all around the room nt frequent in
tervals. United Stales Steel common, on ono of these declines, sold back again
to tho flnnl price of yesterday, entirely wiping out tho Initial gain, nnd later
selling n point under yesterday's close.
Mexican I'et dropped more than 7 points In nil from tho opening, nnd
International Nick 13 points.
Tho leading railway Issues yielded 1 to a points with tho room attributing
the weakness In these stocks to foreign selling, but It wus thought Hint the
supply of suph issues as ICrle came to a great extent from members of the
recently dissolved pools. It Is understood that n largo banking house has
completed the sale of 00,000 shares of American securities consigned to it by
Europe Canadian Pacific was the weakest of this group, being In steady
supply from the opening and showing n loss of "about 5 points from tho
opening price.

MONEY IN NEW YORK
JJEW YOItK, Jan. 26. Tho situation In
the- market for prime mercantile paper
ia. nuc yei unuorgcine any uiiprecuiiiiu
change. There is a good demand for
choice material on the part of banks nnd
other financial Institutions, but the supply
of the quality required is small. For
choice paper running even six and seven
months, 3 per cent, is quoted, but there
U a general unwillingness to discount
paner of any quality under that figure.
yU material lebs strictly gilt-edged, dln-
BUiuJ run up io -l1 per cent, ami in ins
sections institution are not kji
Derations under that rate. Time
Hey on collateral is somewhat tfusler
' In tone, although rates an not quotably
cMnaed. The demand U only moderate.
Brokers report that theie is appreciable

Sugar Cubes Advanced
Tho prlco of cubo suror was advanced
10 cents today by the Franklin Sugar Re
llnlnK Company. Other quotations re
mained unchanged.
Tho concrete Illustration af tho pros
perity of the steel trade by tho United
States Steel Corporation's report encour
nitod the public to look around for other
Industrial Issues today. The recent
BtrcnHth displayed by Lake Superior
shares attracted attention tojthnt stock,
nnd It mica stroiiB. Although some of
Its subsidiaries nro still In receivers'
hands, It Is nsscrtcd in well-informed
iiunrtcra that the hie IncrenBO In orders
placed with the company by the Canadian
and I3iltl9h Governments have so iireatly
o.xpnndcil earnings thnt the company Is
now showing something like S per cent,
earned on the stock. With American steel
manufacturers unnblc to hnntllo the or
ders they nro receiving, nnd with almost
any prices being paid for eaily deliveries,
It Is only natural that prospective pur
chasers should turn to tho Canadian
mills.
The prediction wns mado today that It
would not bo long befoto the Lake Su
perior Corporation would be In a popltlon
to resume payments on Its Income bonds.
There nro $3,000,000 of these, and thrv aio
iion-ciimtllntlvo nn to Intctest, which Is
limited to r, tier cent. An lultlnl pn.xmcnt
of 5 per cent, was made In 1W1, hut no
further disbursements occimctl until 1!10,
when 2V4 per cent, wns distributed. The
full 5 per cent, wns restored In 1012 nnd
191.1, but nothing hns been paid since. The
bonds arc subject to call nt 10.1 nn four
weeks' notice. They changed hands today
nt 27.
The Initial rise In T'nllcil States Steel
met heavy profit-taking sales, nnd the
price rencted, as In Wall stieet. On the
other hand, Cambria tuletl itcntly. but net
particularly active, the Sttcet being In
clined to await the outcome ot lomot tow's
meeting, when inimy it re Inclined to think
thnt something olllclnl may be given out
tegnrdlng tho much-discussed merger.
The lemninder of the local list was more
or less neglected during tho morning, but
