FINANCIAL NEWS
RAILROAD SHARES UNDER PRESSURE
' BECAUSE OP PENDING LABOR TROUBLES
Heavy Selling of Big Issues for Both Long and Short
Account Securities Flowing in From England
& at Rate of $10,000,000 a Week
i
SEW YOIIK. .Inn. 24.
That Inbor trouble will develop before enrly sprltiK lmi low been npnkeri
of an ono of tho linndlcnpn which 1ms prevented InilllMi operations In rnllrond
Mocka at times when Industrial shores showed prnnuiinrcit stietiBth. Conflrma
tlon of these fears was found In the news In jesterday's nnd this morning's
papers of demands by railway labor unions for shorter hours and mote pay,
with Kcncrnl strikes apparently threatened.
This news was the chief factor in the enrly trading today. Krom the open
Inn; thero was heavy selling of stocks like New York Central. Heading, Cnlnn
Pacific nnd Krle, for both long nnd short net mint, nnd thoso Issues gentially
sustained material losses, with New York Central selling at 107 I -S, against
1094i at tho closo on Saturday.
There was a pronounced change In market sentiment In the afternoon when
the suspicion prevailed that stocks at low levels had gone Into strong handi
and thero wan bettor support. United States Steel dividend on tho common
stock, to be acted on tomorrow, continued the1 nhlef factor in determining the
market mood. Representatives of directors were quoted as Haying that tho
common stockholders will not be dissatisfied after tho meeting Is held, nnd late
In tho day thero was n confident belief that whatever policy the management
had In Its mind a week or so ago hail been modllled or radically changed, or
that a good distribution will be made out nr the Inst quarter's earnings. Some
positive statements camo from Important sources to this effect, nnd these
statements were accompanied by nn IncreHicd demand for the stock, which
quickly rallied to above 83 after selling lit S2 3-S.
It was current gossip that the New York and Cymric, which urrlved from
England slneo Saturday, had brought In $25,000,000 of securities', shipped In
connection with tho securities' mobilization plan of the Hrltlsh flovernment
Securities have been flowing Into this market from I'mtlnnd nt tho rale or
110,000,000 a week or moro since last autumn, but tho consignments In the Inst
few weeks huvo been In heavier volume.
It was assumed that It was this supply that caused this morning's reces
sions, but a thorough canvass of houses with International connections failed
to lndlcato that these scurltles are being forced on the market as they arrive.
In some banking circles It was Insisted that the securities are directly or Inill
itctly for J. P. Morgan It Co., and that the process of finding u market Is In the
hands of that firm.

Preliminary Step Taken in Frisco Foreclosure
As a preliminary step In tho foreclosure proceedings of the St. Louis and
Ban Francisco Itallroad, hearing was begun In New York today before two
notaries public. Tho application for tho hearing wan made by the Guaranty
Trust Company, an trustee for the refunding 4 per cent, bonds It Is under the
mortgage securing this Issue that tho foreclosure procetillngs will be con
ducted. Tho hearing was largely on technical points, as to the amount of
bonds Issued, amount of bonds authorized and outstanding, etc. Among those
summoned for examination were Frederick Strauss, chairman of the llcfumllug
Bpndholders' Committee, and C. W. Milliard, vice president (,t tho company
and an agent In Now York for tho receivers. As soon as it can be arranged,
a similar hearing will be held with respect to the prior lien bonds.
Lehigh Valley Earnlnr-s About 13 Per Cent, on Common
At the closo of December tho T.chlgli Valley Itnllroad Company had a gain
of moro than $2. 00,000 In gross ami almost fl.000,000 In net to Its credit, as
compared with tho corresponding six months of the previous year. Last ear
the company earned 10.4T. per cent, on Its common stock, nnd thus far In tho
current fiscal period Its revenues have been nt the annual rate of about 1.1 per
cent, on tho Issue. If the same ratio of Increase Is maintained during tho re
mainder of the fiscal year. It Is apparent that tho earnings on thn slock for
12 months to tho end of Juno 30 next will exceed that of tho previous year by a
liberal margin.

The general run of enrly news favored
the. boars. The cables were lower, re
flecting an Improvement In the vessel sit

arrivals. There was a decline of S.
d. In the Argntlne freight rntes to
USn.
Buying on the decline was good, nnd
resulted hi a sharp upturn. Following
this rise prices eased under profit-taking,
prompted by heavy receipts at Interior
points, nearly double those of n year
ago and amounting to 2.301.000 bushels.
When tho size of tho export business
became known, however, prices Jumprd

NEW YORK COFFEE MAKKET
NEW YOrtK. Jan. Zt -The coffee market
opened steadier this morning and first
prices were unchanged to an advance of
7 points. The sales on the call werq 3000
bass.
During the first part of the day the mar
ket continued to show a steady undertone
with moderate buying for outilde account
and on rumors of some Interruption to
shipments of coffee from ilrazlt to the
Vntted States. On Ihe whole, demand
was not aggressive and the market was
a narrow one, but the undertone held
ceady and there seemed to be a little
ruore fontldeuce In the stability of values'.
