NANCY WYNNE HASlA. WORD TO SAY
ON VARIOUS SUBJECTS OF THE DAY
Dr. and Mrs. Norton Downs Will Give a Large Ball
Tonight at the Bellevue-Stratford for Their Debu
tante Daughter Many Dinners Precede Dance
THE third big dance of the week will
coma oft tonight, when Dr. and Mrs.
Downa will give a ball nt the Bellovuc
Stratford for their daughter, Elizabeth
N Wharton Downs, more familiarly called
Bessie by her frlonds. Bessie Is the old
est daughter In the Downs family and
very attractive, lilie is a graduate of
St. Mary's School In Pcek8klll-ontho-Hudson,
where her rounger sister,
Phoebe, Is pursuing- her studies nt
present.
Bessie belongs to the very oldest nnd
first families of this old Quaker city.
Iler grandmother, Mrs. Thomns Mc
Kean, w'as Miss Bessie Wharton, a sis
ter of Mrs. George Bokcr and a cousin
of tho late Miss Mary Wharton and
Mrs. Charles Churchman. Then back
iurther the family connection through
her great-grandfather, Mr. Henry Pratt
McICean, extends Into tho Borlo family,
for two great-aunts, Miss Clementina
and Miss Elizabeth McKean, married
the Into Mr. Charles Borlo and Mr.
Adolpli E. Dorfe, respectU-ely. It Is a
etory of many generations, but I find
it Interesting, to know theso connections,
and possibly some of tho rest of us do,
too. On tho paternal side of tho family
little Miss Downs has tho happiness of
having her grandfather with her to
enjoy her good times In tho tolling and
In many cases sharing them with her.
Dr. Robert Downs, at tho advanced ago
of more than fourscore, Is ono of tho
most respected of tho medical men of this
city. Both his sons took up his pro
fession, tho elder marrying Miss Mc
Kean and the younger Dr. Hotiort
Downs, Jr., married Miss Ella Wood.
On Wednesday evening Bessie's uncle,
Mr. Henry Pratt McKean, and his wife,
who was Miss Margaret Hiker, of Now
York, gavo a theatre party and supper
for her, and tho Tom McICcans have
also entertained for her on various
occasions.
Speaking of entertainments reminds
mo of a recent ono which took tho form
of a largo dinner, to which many gucsta
of great importance were invited, some
of whom wero from out of town, and
sovcral speeches were to bo mndo by
leading men of tho city and State. As
often happens at theso formal affairs,
thcro wero a few hitches; for Instance,
.tho waiter nt ono tablo got mixed on
tho wlno question and served instead
of sherry with tho soup a rather hot
brandy, and some eight or nine men
could not maka up their minds as to
what It was. Ono thing was euro In
tho minds of nil, howover, nnd that
was It was not sherry. It proved di
verting for theso guests, who up to that
tlmo had been entertained by a lady
who Insisted on announcing and rean
nounclng, "This I3 purely a nonsoclal
affair, of courso you know," which loud,
polite remark penetrated to tho far
ends of tho room. To cap tho climax
of happenings, ono of tho moat courtly
of tho gentlemen present, having risen
to respond to a request from tho
hostess, pulled out a small golden chair,
and lo! as ho neatcd himself with great
dignity awny went tho legs, nnd it re
quired many gyrations and wild ges
tures beforo his balanco was regained.
With tho soclnl wheel going at
express speed, it's a weo bit difficult
to keep paco with all tho events. There
Is no question, howover, as to the stir
being' made by tho supper party nnd
dance which tho Sam Riddles nro
giving to 1000 of their friends nt tho
Itltz on Fobruary 1. I've been told
thcro -are to be some rather delightful
Innovations, all of which makes one's
thoughts fly sky high In excited
anticipation.
There Is to bo a perfect orgy of
music In addition to tho Ritz band,
an orchestra from tho Crystal Room In
New York will perform, and, of course,
there will bo a "ripping" negro band
to lay tho latest thing in fox-trots
and tangoes. And for those who are
not to keen on dancing, a Neapolitan
sextet will sing and "discourse sweet
music" In the Junior Ball Room, where,
In addition , to that In tho res
taurant, a standing buffet supper will
bo served. A bit Incongruous but
rather nice, don't you think, to munch
the "llgalreux en surprise" or tho
"hultres frlte3 a la Polonalso" to the
tune of something soft and low. In
cidentally, it helps the digestion and
stops the gabbling for a minute or two.
Of course, too, there will be the
inevitable sausages, scrambled eggs
and "cafe au lalt" to usher In the
dawn all this Is in anticipation, how
ever; but, as every one knows, Rid
dle Is another name for hospitality,
d it's a foregone conclusion that
every one will have a perfectly hectic
time,
Pn the nrecedlnir evenlrxr. Ned
Brooke, brother of deorge Brooke, will
P'ay host to 30 of his friends, with a
wpper and dance In the Parisian room
and annex. NANCY WYNNE,

The Big Rooster Did Not
Laugh at Mamma Goose !
Not a bit of it! He knew Mamma Goose had hit upon the
plan to outwit the slim, sly fox. And though all the Barn
yard cackled merrily at Mamma Goose's funny plan, the Big
Rooster said Mamma Goose was the wisest fowl of all.
Next Sunday the kiddies shall see how wise was Mamma
Goose. Her delightful tale comes in the fourth great Punky
Dunk story 32 pages, illustrated in six colors and ready to
fold into a real book.
Mamma Goose, like Punky Dunk, is a kind, happy friend
of the little folk. Be sure your children meet her. And
place your order early. The demand for "The Wise Mamma
Goose" is enormous.
