business transacted cither today or for many days pant has been on tho
selling side.
United Stntes Industrial Alcohol continued Its upward movement, mnUintr
a Rrtli. of nearly seven points, selling at the new high record of 1S2'4. The
sudden demonstration In Industrial Alcohol attracted Increased attention today
to stories of tho huge earnings of the corporation, nnd dividend possibilities
were again brought up. One report was that Initial dividends wilt soon bo
declared nt tho rate of 1(5 per cent, per annum, nnd It was Insisted thnt tho
movement In Industrial Alcohol will bo followed by lgorous busing of DIs
tillers Securities.
Another story on industrial Alcohol which went the rounds was to tho i llutte a. Superior
effect that n dividend nf tin In rnsli will Iip tmld In the. first half of the venr lal Petroleum
nnd another of $10 In cash In the second half. In tho calendar jear 191S tho
profits were equivalent to between 1G nnd 20 per cent, on the $12,000,000 out
standing common stock, cnmp.ired with 2 per cent. In 1914.
Heay selling of United States Steel common caused pronounced nnset
tlemcnt In the speculative situation In tho afternoon. Three houses sold
20,000 shares of the stock, forcing tho price below SK. nnd following this sell
ing stocks were offered at concessions all around the room. Thcro was a
lack of demand from any source, the efforts to advance specialties being sud
denly checked.
Texas Company was the most prominent feature, first advancing 6'S points
to 229 on the announcement of tho offer of 20 per cent, of new stock nt par
tb present holders, but suddenly broko to 212, with a sharp rally after that
decline.

Tor some weeks the embargo on etpo-t

caused considerable discussion and In
somo cases nnxloty lo the steel manufac
