ROOM TRAtE&'S OFFERED STOCKS
AT CONCESSIONS IN AFTERNOON
Selling Concentrated in War Specialties Heavy Buying
Orders in Industrial Alcohol Checked Movement.
Market Situation Hard' to Analyze
NKW YORK, .Ian. IS.
There was no blimmo In mnrlict conditions In today's trndlnp, nbaencc
of oittAldo speculative buying making the tone wavering, mul moderate liquida
tion, coupled with nggresslvo (tolling by tienrlsh room traders, was effective
In forcing prices of many Issues to lower levels. Some specialties, however,
wcra exceptionally strong. Cuban-Amcrlcnn Sugar Refining, with nn advance
of 8V4 to 181U, making n new high record. The buying of tills stock was
accompanied by reports that It will soon ho placed on a 20 per cent, divi
dend basis. '
Tho afternoon session was marked by vigorous trading on tho part of
tho speculative element, tho room traders offering stock nt concessions and
cnuslng somo substantial losses. Most of this selling was concentrated In
the war-order stocks, Including Crucible Steel, Ilaldwln Locomotive and Beth
lehem Steel. Tho leading Industrials and railroads, nt tho same time, wcro
Offered At fractional declines.
This movement was checked by the appearance of heavy buying orders
In Industrial Alcohol, which suddenly rose from 13R? to Ml'i, again lifting '
Its how high record. There was no news development to explnln this move- !
ment, but there wns a disposition to attribute It to pool activities and to the
general expectation that a liberal dividend payment is near nt hand. J
Marine, preferred was supplied by many of tho houses that had been
active In forcing tho ndvnnce. Henry Clews d. Co. supplied ln.OOO shares of
the common stock after It sold nt Its new high record. There was n vigorous '
upturn In Now York Central, which rose from 1099J to 111. United States
Btcel was heavy throughout tho day. Tho market situation was hnrd to
nnnlyzc, somo Interests believing that Industrial Alcohol and other Issues will '
advance In order to facilitate liquidation In other storks, hut this view was j
not confirmed by tho character of the,, selling, outside of the Marine Issues.
Bondholders May Undertake Reorganization
Vhllo It Is expected by Interests well informed on Rock Island affairs
that Investigations and legal proceedings of various hinds will ho undertaken
within tho next six months, they nevertheless believe that tho bondholders
will undertake n comprehensive reorganization nt n comparatively early date.
In tho Judgment of theso Interests, only one thing should ho done, namely,
that tho bondholders should foreclose and work out n comprehensive reor
ganization plan that would provide for a large blanket mortgage. It should
be sufficient not only to take care of existing obligations, but also to supply
tho company with ample (funds through a period of years for improvement
ttnd development work.
