MANY ISSUES ESTABLISHED HIGHER
PRICES WITHOUT SPECULATORS' AID
I Ldng Account Liquidated on Declines During Week.
j Short Interest Has Been Built Up Street Attached
I Much Importance to New Submarine Agreement
I ' NEW YOltK. Jan. 8.
1 Higher prices Wo established In ninny Issues In toitny's stock market
I trading without tho jild of any speculative Interests. Slnco Inst Monday tho
speculative) clement has been nlmost unKcrsully committed to tho bear Ride,
md not only has tho weak lonff account been liquidated on the declines which
occurred since then, but a considerable short Interest has also been created,
and the market Is ngaln left with so scant n supply of stocks ni to mnko
advances easy to effect without any special effort on the part of the bull Interest,
In fact, trading had not been long In progress today before It became neces
sary to hold tho market In check, and this was done by some of tho largo
buyers turning to the selling side and supplying part of the urgent demand.
An Instanco was shown In American Can, which was heavily bought In tho
parly trading by C. D. Harney & Co., when the stock advanced one point to
64, and thnt firm found It necessary to discontinue Its purchases and supply
uorno of tho bids, which enme In from mnny sources.
Tho Street wns disposed to regnrd the display of this stork as due to
confidence. In a favorable decision In the Government suit, but In nil prob
ability the chief factor In recent buying has been Information In regnrd to
tho showing to bo tnado In the minimi report for the year ended December 31. ,
Tho annual meeting of tho company will bo held on tho first Tuesday of
February, and It Is expected a preliminary statement w 111 be Issued now
within a short time. j
Tho ndvnncc In the price of crude oil nns nn Incentive to some brisk buying l
of Mexican Petroleum which rose 2'i points to 122, but It hns been apparent '
that outsldo Interests have been rebuylng that stock for the last two days and i
that the recovery wns duo more to this change of position than to any other
reason.
Tho general character of the market wns shown most clearly by New York I
Central, which rnndo an advance of 1H points. Amerlcnn Smelting wns strong
In tho enrly trndlng, opening lit up ut 1114 followed by a reaction to 110n.
Atchison wns repressed by continued foreign selling and failed to show any Im
provement of Importance. London sold virtually nil the stock traded In during
the nfternoon.
The Street wns disposed to nttnch tho highest importance to the statements
In regard to a new ngrcement on submarine nctlvltics in the Mediterranean nnd
to a settlement ocr tho differences arising over the I.usltiuila dlsnster, but the
nctlvo speculative interest took the position that definite Information from
Washington In regnrd to these mntters should bo awnlted. KxtcnsUc com
mittments are made on the long side.
Sterling exchnngo showed a stronger tone, ndvanclng 1 cent to 4.70 nnd there
was a rally of ono cent In relchsmnrks, which were quoted at 74 bid.

No fault can be found with the general
Iron nnd steel trade nowadays, nnd It li
small wonder that local steel shares have,
been showing such marked firmness. Tho
only question of uncertainty Is with re
spect to commercial nnd flnnnclnl condi
tions as tho world war draws to a close
nnd foreign bulng Is exhausted.
Then fierce Industrial competition may
be expected lo set In.
This Is probably what Mr. CJnry meant
In his wnrnlng speech tho other day.
While he Inferred thnt the steel trade
prosperity will continue nt least as long
ns the war lasts, he suggested that it
will probably end sooner than Is generally
expected.
There was little to discuss In tho local
stock market during tho two hours It
remained open for business today. On
the whole tho tons was firm, but prlco
changes were devoid of significance 1..0
