liDER NEW CUV RULE
SAYS MUM'S THE WORD
Miss Catherine Denny, Secre
tary to Director Dateaman,
Knows, but ShunB Politics.
Believes in Suffrage
IS "WOMAN FOR THE JOB"
The keynote of efficiency that seems to
have been struck In the appointment of
the man who form tho personnel ot the
Department of Public Works under the
new administration extends also to Its
women assistants, and especially to Mls(
Catherine Denney, who will not In the
capacity of confidential stenographer to
the now Director, Georgo E. Datesman.
Miss Denney haa boon Mr. Dateaman'si
right-hand assistant In tho Bureau ot
Survoya for to quota her own vrordsw
'years and years, and so on."
Living up to her owp Ideal of thq quali
ties that go to mako up the most effi
cient nnd desirable confidential stenog
rapher, namely, makinsr one'a aelf an ab
solutoly dependable person, haa resulted
In her chief's retention of her as a clear
asset to tho department
Yesterday found her striving to get
her bearings In the new office at a strange.
de9k among new nssoclntes. Every eon
sclontlous effort at work, however, waa
punctuated by tho hearty handshakes of
her friends and former co-workers, who
dropped In to extend their congratulatlotn
for her new appointment
It Is safe to any that no hostess at mi
afternoon tea ever waa callod updn U
extend her hand In greeting more oftea
than this young womnn durinjr office
hours yesterday.
An Interview with Miss Denney wilt
convince oven the mildly observing that
she Is, to use the present day vornaoular,
tho "womnn for tho Job." Well poised,
deliberate nnd careful In her phrasing;,
well versed In all the technicalities of tha
work of the department of mature judg
ment, keen as a atecl trnp and "mum"
on questions that strictly concern depart
mental affairs, It Is safe to assume that
the confidential, stenographto end of Mr.
Datcsmnn's office Is ably handled.
Miss Denney's business career haa been
such that eho has had ample opportunity
to get n pretty thorough Idoa of the In
tricacies of politics and Judgo whero
women would stand In the game, should
they bo enfranchised.
Quizzed about It she replied, "I have
seen Just enough of politics to feel satis
fied to stay out of It. Not that t bellevo
women shouldn't havo tho voto. I nm
a believer In limited suffrage; a voice In
the government for women who hold
property. Why shouldn't n womnn be on
titled to have something to say about
the way her tax money Is spentf"
Probably Miss Denney confessed to the
moBt remarkable hobby over pursued by
a member of the fair sex, I. e. a study of v
higher mathematics. Problems In geome
try, trigonometry, nnd ndvnnced algebra
have become child's play to her, nnd she
Is Just about to swoop down on the com
plexities of calculus.
Miss Denney's now position will yield
her a salary of $1200 annually. She Is the
first woman to receive an appointment
under the now administration.
