Internal difficulties of which wo know
nothing. Owing to our censorship, jou
know ver llttlo about our side of tho

with which your country has been del
uged, you nro almost entirely Ignorant of
the German campaign of woman nnd child
killing. Americans say to me, "Do ou
really think that my German gardener
or German chauffeur, my Gorman clerk

man who would fight behind living ram
parts of women and children'"' I do not

Tho point of view of virtually ever

Innders and South Africans, Is that the
English-speaking end of tho war Is a
matter for the British Empire, nnd that,
despite our lack at preparation, wo do
not need anj help fiom tho United States
Another section of British thought, and
this also applies to almost all Trench
thought. Is that the Intervention of tho
United States would bo a calamity to tho
Allies. Ill-balanced, Ignorant, but well-
meaning people like your Sir. Ford are
supposed to bo tjpicnl of many in tho
United States, though I confess I havo
never met them during the many Jour
neys I have made throughout jour coun-

PORD AS PRO-GERMAN
A Trenohman said to mo recently "I
wonder If Mr. Ford had been born In, rt
us eaj Lille instead of Detroit, and his
mother hod been murdered nnd his sis
ters outraged, whether ho would have
been so strongly In favor of peace with
Germanj." I wonder, too We regard
anybody who wants to make peace now,
before tho Allies are prepared, ns a pro
German, and we will not print one line
of tha ord advertising In this country,
despite the frantic efforts of his agents to
secure publicity here The point of view
that premature peace Is pro-German does
not seem to be understood in the United
States.
Personally, I doubt that the United
States will really prepare fot any war.
There will be on Immense amount of talk,

One day the Laplanders or tho Green
landers or somo other nation (you can
change the words as you choose) will
notice that jou are rich and pacifist
and will corao and take what they want.
How would you like us to Interfere when
they had accomplished part of their task
and you were not yet ready and for us to
cry "peace" when, say, the Laplanders or
Greenlauders were occupying Oregon, the
State of "Washington, perhaps California;
places, as you know, extremely accessible
to the Laplanders. That Is how we feel
about peace making before we are ready
to impose the terms that we think neces

Finally, the main policy of dreat
Britain Is: First, to keep German ships
off the sea so long1 as a single German
soldier remains la Allies' territory and so
