Tho patrons of tho Locust Thentre will
marked again last Saturday evening,
when ono of the most satisfying perform
nnces of opera since the senson began
wns nttended by a number of music lovers
far smaller than thnt which hns come to
very second-rate performances before.
Tho singers and dancers of the Hoston
Opera Company were heard nnd seen In
"I Pngllaccl" and In the ballet "Coppelln,"
both performed with amazing finish and
beauty.
In the ballet Anna Pavlowa appeared
In a Ftrnnge nnd almost unrecognizable
Incarnation. She looked moro fragile, more
beautiful, than ever and her representa
tion of the doll wns exquisite nnd dainty
of the most! In her company neither
Mile. Kuhu nor Mile. PlnskOvIetzkn was
at best, but tho ensemble had all Its an
cient vigor. Its perfect cuntrol nnd Its
delicacy which so seldom accompanies
these virtues.
Yet line ns "Coppelia" wns, It was
dwarfed by n masterpiece of operatic 1
work In "I Pngllaccl." That opera, al- I
ready so ancient, gives promise of per-
mnnenco In repertoire which fnr exceeds
tho promise of the other opera with which
It Is customarily given. Miss Teyte wns ;
u favorablo Xedda, but delightful ns she
wns to see, she suffered by her hnblt of
exposing herself to the audience rather '
than to her fellow players. Her Silvio 1

the Cnnlo of Zenatello nnd tho Tonlo of '

again mndo it clear that be Is. In nil pos

that of Caruso, and he Is incomparably
a liner nrtlst. Ills entrance, nil lightness
nnd camaraderie, the strolling player's
case and insinuation, his gayety. all were
Immediately engaging. And except for
the moment when he Imitated Caruso nt
his worst, in the lament, the rest of tho
performance wns Inepronchnble. Ite
menibcrlng his Otello of a Saturday night
not so long ago, wo wonder when .Mr.
Zenntcllo will be returned to his own.
For these two opcins alone, without the
ballet nnd the interesting cxpeilments,
the Hoston Opera Company must bo
praised until criticism sounds like press
agentry. It ought to be a terrible lesson
to tho opera company which is killing
opera in America. G. S. V.
