NANCY WYNNE'S DAILY GOSSIP Benedicks Ball to Be Important Event Tonight Mr. and Mrs. Charlemagne Tower Will Entertain Before BallOther Dinners rrWE most important affair socially I . ..-. III Via fVin niMloillnlfo' Tlolt itonigni " "" which will bo given nt Horticultural Itall. This ball Is always ono of the most enjoyable affairs of the year and Is looked forward to by old and younpr, -nd the debutante who Is lucky enough to receive an Invitation Is the envied of all others, Thero will bo a number of largo din ners before hand. Mr. and Mrs. Clinrlo rnagno Tower will entertain In honor of Helen and Gertrudo, and the John Hampton Barnes will entertain for jlary Bohlcn, who Is ono of the "lucky" debs. Among thoso who will recelvo at the ball will bo Mrs. Alexander Van Rens selaer, Mrs, Edward Lowber Welsh and Mrs. Tower. It Is astrangro (thing and a rather terlous one to say the least, how a story rises out of a very trivial occurrence, Is told from mouth to mouth and I am afraid each ono enlarges a tiny bit and the first tiling you know somo ono is Injured by an absolutely untrue tale. There has been ono going tho rounds lately about ono of our little debu tantes, which though by no means wicked, still mado her seem decidedly racy and which turns out ito bo tho manufacture of many Imaginative brains. It was said that this same llttlo girl attended a party lately on tho Main Lino and when In tho conserva tory of this private homo accepted a dare from two young men to pose In the fountain, which she did and the young men aro supposed to have turned on tho water and half drowned tho imall girl. Now I think It Is rather Interesting to know that tho same little lady did not remove her shoes nnd stockings nnd jump Into any fountain In any prlvato house, nor even think of so doing. The true storyls thlc: Tho deb In question wits walking through Rltten house Squnro with a certain young suitor and when they came to tho foun tain or rather pond there, said suitor dared tho wee girl to walk around tho edge on tho broad border and straight way they both proceeded to do so. It la such an Innocent llttlo story and just plain fun and it docs seem a pity that such a story grew out of it, Just be cause the small girl is full of life. Of course, I do not mean to advocato run ning around the curbs of fountains and ponds, but surely the worst that could be said about it is that It was not very dignified and there It ends. Unfortu nately they both thought It was fun and told different friends, who In turn repeated it to others and so It grew. L That this is indeed tho day of delight ful democracy was brought homo to my astonished gazo the other morning When I behold ono of tho most nttract ivo of our younger matrons, Bwnthed t.ln furs, hurrying in the direction of her ' homo on South 13th street. A glorious morning for the "constitutional" 1 con ceded; but thero was a vastly dif ferent object in that early morning t (troll, for fato decreed at that juncture. i or perhups It was a capricious wind, that tho package which she carried be- t hind her huge muff should slip its moorings and lo! 1 1 tho twinkling of ' an eyelash, tho sidewalk was littered with nice, crisp breakfast rolls. Her embarrassment, when a passerby of fered to restore tho broken bag and its former contonts, was pretty to behold, but I'm wondering If "dejeuner" was disposed of that morning, for tho lady hurried on toward her homo with only , the remnant of a smllo as an Indication of the morning a adventure. The engagement of Agnes Knnnedy, the older daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Edward Kennedy, to young Caspar Townsend has been announced. The secret has not really been n secret to those "in tho know" for some time, although many people thought they had decided to wnit until tho spring to make any formal acknowledgment. Agnes, who 1b smaller than her debutante sister Emllie and much more of a brunette type, possesses much charm of manner and wears the most ultra-clothes with a verve that makes them extremely becoming. At the recent Page-Kremer wedding she appeared in one of the most distinctive costumes seen for some time. Her trotteur, of deep brick-red broadcloth, had a short coat which flared out from the skirt at the waist line and was trimmed with a deep, square collar and wide cuffs of sable fur. Her hat was the oddest shape conceivable of gqli lace In a scoop the -peak taper ing almost to a point at the crown, where it had a band of sable. Miss Kennedy has won quite a reputation for herself on the courts, and gen erally succeeds in carrying off some honors in the spring and fall tennis tournaments. Her finance Is a son of Sir. J, Barton Townsend, of Over brook, and a brother of Miss Marjorie Townsend and qf little Anne Town send, who will probably spend several more years at school, NANCY WYNNE.
