FINANCIAL NEWS
STOCKS DECLINED IN WALL STREET
ON A GENERAL SELLING MOVEMENT
Texas and Pacific Weak Because of Application for a
Receiver Outlook for Railroads Good November
Earnings of St. Paul Will Be a Record
NEW YOUK. Dec. 28.
Ground that was gained by tho stock market In tho trading yesterday
was lost shortly after noon today, when there was a general selling move'
ment, which carried everything on tho list, with few exceptions, to prices
below tho final of yesterday. Thero was no other apparent reason for the decline
than pront-taklng, and sales of this character wero quite extensive In the
afternoon. During the morning session somo stocks were Btrong, Mexican
Petroleum, for Instance, moving to a new top, and New York Central also
reached the highest point It has sold since 1912. Texas and Pacific Railroad,
which was affected by tho application for a receiver and which was down
six points at the low. Tho market closed weak. Somo shares wero unchanged
from last night, but tho majority were below.
Instead of advancing on tho nnnonucement of nn Increased dividend and
higher prices for copper metal, Anconda sold off with the test of tho list, going
below the close of estorday long before 2 o'clock. No surprlso was occasioned
by tho Increased dividend, as It was In lino with general expectations. When
thero was talk threo months ngo of a larger disbursement on the stock, It was
Intimated In well-informed quarters that such action would possibly bo taken
at tho December meeting. The company, no doubt, has been making a hand
Bomo showing bo far as earnings nrc concerned, becauso of the high price ruling
for copper metal. Tho company Is sold for somo tlmo ahead, mid In addition has
taken a contract with Great Britain for moro than 135,000,000 pounds of tho red
metal to be delivered during 1916.
It must not bo overlooked that tho Anaconda Is spending an enormous
amount of money for additions and Improvements, which will sooner or later
result In larger earnings and will thus In tlmo reach the pockets of tho stock
holders. It Is known that the management wilt cnrr out all the plans adnnccd,
which can bo done easily under present conditions. AVhcn everything Is finally
disposed of tho Anaconda will have further Intrenched Its position as "tho
biggest copper mine."
Following tho publication yesterday of favorablo statements by the Union
Pacific, Atchison nnd Erlo Railroads, otllctals of all three roads today dcclnred
themselves sangulno over tho outlook and expressed confidence In tho rail
road situation as a whole. The Western ronds have not been ns quick to
recover from tho effects of the prolonged business depression ns many of
tho Eastern lines, Including tho Erie, New York Central, Baltimore nnd Ohio,
Pennsylvania, New Haven nnd others.
The Eastern roads have been favored with a largo amount of wnr-ordcr
business, which has swelled their recnues considerably In recent months.
Tho betterment shown on tho Western lines, however, railroad officials say.
Is duo moro largely to general improcment In commercial conditions. Reports
from all parts of tho country recently have Indicated an expansion In busi
ness. Bank clearings In tho various cities have been growing rnpldly, and tho
Indications aro for a contlnuanco of theso gratifying results.
It Is understood on good authority that the gross nnd net figures of the
Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Taul for November, to bo published Into this
aftornoon or tomorrow, will show tho largest Increases for any single month
In tho history of tho rond.
In the last day or two a fenturo of tho market for prime mercantile paper
has been tho buying by financial Institutions, presumably for "window dress
ing" for tho end-of-thc-yenr accounts. Tho market generally Is reported
moderatoly nctlvo at from 3 to 3 per cent., according to qunllty and length
of maturity.
Anaconda Dividend Increased
Tho Board of Directors of tho Annronda, Copper Company today dcplnred n
quarterly dividend of $1.B0 a share, piablo robruary 28 to stock of record
January 22. Threo months ngo a dividend of $1 was paid.

Market
NEW YORK, Doc 28. A steady tono
was shown on the cotton market at tho
opening this morning and prices wore 2
to 6 points higher. Buying was fair and

Inquiries centred around tho March con

The Liverpool market reopened after
the extended holidays and showed gains
of 13 to 14 points, or slightly below ex
pectations. This, however, hud no In

Practically all stations In the central
and western portions of the cotton belt
reported rainfall this morning Tempera
tures were lower In the north and north,
west.
The market became less nctlvc In the
afternoon, but maintained a gelrally
steady undertone Offerings wero limited
to scattered realizing rales. Heavy ar
rivals of llnters, about 7000 bales, at
tracted considerable attention It was
understood that most of this cotton was
consigned to a steamship line for ship
ment to Havre Total arrlvnls of cotton
at New York for the day were 15.570
bales. English advices state that trans-
portntlon difficulties nre one of tho most
perplexing problems at the moment. Ex
ports for the day aggregated 7450 bales,
against 27,670 bales a eai ago.
