G. Albert Lewis, 86 years old, one of
Philadelphia's most remarkable charac
ters because of his versatility, died yes
terday at his home, 1S31 Do Lancey street.
He was a painter nnd flnnncler and his
torian. G. Albert Lewis wns born July 3, US),
and received his early education at tho
Friends' Academy. He was the son of
John F. Lewis, nn old-tlmo Philadelphia
merchant.
Albert wns tha seventh son, nnd after
leaving school ho entered the counting
houso of his brother, ndwln M. Lewis &
Co., nnd In 1K0 became a member of tho
firm of John A. Lewis & Co., nnd after
Its dissolution beenmo assistant to tho
president and cashier of tho Farmers
nnd Mechanlcs Natlonnl Uank in 1S37.
Mr. Lewis was elected cashier of tho
City National Bank In 1853, o. position ho
held for 37 years, resigning In 1D00.
Ho wns an artist of considerable abil
ity, exhibiting for a number of seasons
paintings in oil nnd in wnter color at
the exhibitions of tho Pennsylvania
Acndemy of the Flno Arts nnd nt thoso
hold by tho Artists' Fund Society of
Philadelphia. Ho dovoted much time to
tho study of genealogy. In which he be
came exceedingly skilful. Ho was a mem
ber of tho Historical Society of Penn
sylvania, the Numismatic and Antiquar
ian Society and tho Amorlcan Philosoph
ical Society.
Ho married, in 1851, Anne Cornelia, tho
daughter of tho Bcv. Thomas Lnrcombo.
