YULETIDE DECORATIONS ABSENT
ON NEW YORK EXCHANGE FLOOR
Christians Bonuses Came Along, However American
Tobacco a Strong Issue Present Dividend in
No Immediate Danger, 'Tis Said
NEW YOIIK, Dec. 24.
There ai one brenk In nil the record of tho Stock exchange for the
Christmas period todny. No demonstration vvns made by nny of the brokers
In direction of tho ustml festooni of evergreen nnd holly bunches, nnd nil
that was done to toll of the Chrlstmnstltlo spirit was around tho telephone
booths, which was inld for by the telephone clerks themselves. This Is tho
first tlmo In oil tho lonjr Stock ttxchiuiKo history that the coming of Christ
mas has not been taken worthy of organized action. Hven where the time
has passed up to the Inst day without nny effort tit display or celebration,
committees haVo been formed over night, nnd In the morning the Stock
Exchange floor was a mass of green and red. The Christmas bonuses, how
ever, enmo In old-time shape. livery one looked to for gifts was a cheerful
giver, nnd there were more hnppy receivers In the Wall street section thnn
have been Been there In several years.
As far ns price movements went, it was n bull Christmas, but, while
higher prices satisfied customers, the diminished volumo of trading hnd an
opposite effect on brokers. New York Central and United States Steel common,
lenders In their respective groups, binned tho way to higher prices. New York
Central broke through another unit, crossing 108 with an advance of s to
10874, coming close to the high record of 1093; In 1013, which may rensonnbly
bo expected to be passed early next week. United States Steel common nlso
moved up , selling nt S7)i before noon. This upturn was a natural sequence
to tho absorption which has been In progress for some dns nnd which was
most pronounced yesterday, when 40,000 shares were taken on orders from
n single source. Tho market closed strong.
American Tobacco, which was vvenk for seerol days, made some recov
ery today, selling up more thnn sovon points, some of which was lost In tho
nfternoon session. Tho selling of a block of 4000 shares of Tobacco common
by one of tho largest Individual holders, nn cstntc. Is said to be the prin
cipal reason for tho recent extreme weakness of thnt Issue Tho weakness,
It Is said, was aided by the fact thnt certain Interests close to the American
Tobacco Companj, learning of tho Impending liquidation, used their best
efforts to buy this stock In at tho lowest possible price.
From those In n position to know It Is learned that tho present dividend
on American Tobacco common Is In no Immedlnto danger, and thnt the present
earnings warrant tho continuation of tho present rate for some time to como,
Tho $40,242,000 common stock of tho company Is now distributed among
1900 persons, nil residing In this country. Tho foreign holdings of the com
pany's Rtock 1ms virtually nil been liquidated.
Tho mercantile paper market continues narrow. It Is a dubious prospect
for tho financial Institutions that are attempting to secure 4 per cent, on
paper, and tho nccumulatlon of 'funds, ns previously reported, has forced the
banks and trust companies to do a lot of redlscountlng. Rates for extra
choice quality are 3 per cent., with the nerngc 3 " fTT 3 V4 per cent, at the

PLAN NOT SATISFACTORY
New York Bond Sales
Three Protective Committees Do Not
Like It as Approved
NEW VOniC. Dec 21 Tho plan of n
orgnnlzatlon for the St Louis nnd Sin
Francisco Hallrond Company, ns approved
by the Missouri Commission, Is unsatis
factory to tho three protective commit
tees thnt worked it out. At least two
fenurcs of the plnn In the form In which
It wns presented to the commls'Uon, both
of which were rejected by that body,
were regarded by these committees ns
highly Important. Particular stress was
laid by them upon the otlng trusteeship,
which Is not nllowcd by tho commission
The committee and tho bankers as
sociated with them felt that If they be
came financially responsible for tho suc
cess of tho plnn thej should be permitted
to namo the directors for n period of
years, during which the new compiny
would hao an opportunity to thoroahly
establish itself
Inasmuch ns mcmbrs of tho three com
mittees have not received official copies
of the plan ns npproved bj tho commis
sion, the were disinclined todnj to cx
prcsb nn opinion regarding it, or as to
what they would probably do next. There
is excellent reason for belleWng, how
ever, thnt for several weeks they have
had In mind what they would do. and
what they were contldcnt they could do.
In the event of the decision nf the com
mission not being satisfactory.
