short life of tho bonds In Itself will bo a sustaining factor.
Tho firmness brought about In tho mnrket around noon by. tho favorablo
statement of the Steel Corporation was very short-lived, and by 2 o'clock tho
market had tnken on a downwrd tendency.' Some Issues maintained a llttlo
strength, but tho majority wcro off from tho final of yesterday.
Central Leather, ex the special dividend of 4. per cent., yesterday displayed
a llttlo heaviness. Today, however, the market Is flrmr. This heaviness may
have been duo to technical conditions. No short would havo failed to cover
when confronted with tho nlternntlvo of paying a 4 per cent, dividend. Also,
the Street argument wns that, with tho dividend off tho price, nothing moro
wns to bo expected' for a year.
This Is not tho view of well-informed people, who consider that there is a
very fair chance that in January tho management may put tho stock on a regu
lar 4 per cent, dividend basis. The special dividend, as was announced, was for
Iho year gone by.
The pool In Goodrich has shown signs of greater activity lately and quite
n llttlo stock has Just been turned over around 75. People who have been Inter
ested In tho stock all nlong say that tho stock will bo put on a D per cent, basis
around tho first of the year. As a G per cent, stock, tho present price does not
appear to bo particularly low.

Wheat sold a fraction above Inst night's
closing prices and then Bottled Into a
steady swing. December brought $1.15
on the first sales, ,t cent over ycstcrday'B
final quotations, nnd May was sold at
J1.16H. or an advance of i cent. Prices
did not go over or under a cent less
tlian the Initial ones beforo noon.
Despite the dulness In the early hours.
It wns said Hint the undertone was Orm
and well supported. The liquidations
which brought tho decline of tho last
ten days are said to be over.
A bullish sentiment was caused by the
report of tho destruction of 800,000 bush
els of wheat In tho elevator lire at Brie
and tho news from Washington that tho
Spanish Government hnd decided to per
mit the Importation of 7,400,000 bushels
of whent.
Corn nnd oats opened favorablo and
chnnged but llttlo In tho early hours.
Export snles reported totaled uoO.OOO
bushels of wheat and 300.000 bushels of
nnts. Cash handlers sold for seaboard
delivery 65,000 bushels of wheat.
Tho mnrket nt Liverpool was un
changed, with prices easier. Spot sold
to VSd. higher. Cargoes wero uncertain.
