Tmn Oarrlty, sponsor for the Indus-

the real plans for tho organization would
bo discussed nt a convention of tho rep
resentatives of seven manufacturing con
cerns Interested on next Wednesday
evening- in tho auditorium of tho Electric
Storage Mattery Company, on Allegheny
avenue.
When Interviewed Mr. Oarrlty said!
"The Idea of organizing a soccer league
composed of manufacturing plants of tho
city lias been In mind for a long time, but
thcro did not seem to bo enough Interest
to morlt an attempt until quite recently.
I called tip several men In other plants of
tho city and they seemed delighted at tho
proposition. Then I got busy and slnco
then thlnus have looked rosy.
"At the meeting to bo held Wednesday
nt tho Electric Stnrago Mattery audito
rium the futuro plans will bo discussed
nnd wo will form somo sort of an or
ganization to get things going.
"At this tlmo there am seven teams
willing- to tnke tin the light for tho cham-
plonalilp banner In tho league. Electric
Storago Mattery Company officials, Halo
& Kllburn, American Pulley, Cresson
3Iorrla Manufacturing Company. Wheeler

fllgnlllcd their Intention of entering a

Is suro to bo filled by tho night of tho

team circuit:
Electric Storage Mattery Company's soc
cer team wilt play a. gamo with tho Mer
rymakers of Iloxborough next Saturday
afternoon at the Matterymcn's Orounds,
Chclten aventoe and Magnolia street. Klec
trlc Storago Mattery tnakcra aro singu
larly blessed, so f.ir as material Is con
cerned. Thcro nro about 49 men who nro
eager to fill In at any position In tho
event of an accident to ono of tho regu
lars. Clcctrlc Storago has had a very suc
cessful season so far. Such teams ns
Wheeler Compnny. Cresson and Oartlcld
have been met and defeated. Tho only
loss In seven games was to Lorctta,
REFORM FOR SECONDS
OF BOXERS SHOULD BE
MADE AT LOCAL CLUBS
Local Promoters Would Do
Well to Put Ban on Those
Whose Conduct Is
Not Ethical
Philadelphia promoters would do well
by Inaugurating a reform barring boxers'
seconds, who sprlnklo rlngsido patrons
with water and various other mixtures
during rest periods. This, no doubt,
would meet with tho approval of all light
fans. Thero has never been nny excuso
for alleged seconds to glvo rlngsldo spec
tators the benefit of water from their
sponges that tho performers should get.
Somo of theso fellows who crawl
through tho ropos during tho Intermis
sions and call themselves seconds aro
really nothing but Jokes, and mnro of a
handicap than a help to the men they
nro handling. Somo of them seem to
think all that Is required of a second Is
to throw water on spectators, blow rosin
In the faces of funs while swinging towels
or fans and mal:o a general nuisance of
themselves by shouting foolish Instruc
tions to their lighters, whllo bouts aro
In progress.
Of course, thero are capable handlers,
who devote tho one-mlnue intermission
to preparing their boxers for the next
round and theso aro tho fellows who sel
dom annoy spectators. Hut a good many
alleged seconds uro nothing short of nui
sances and taken seriously only by them
selves and tho fans they annoy.
After much dickering over tho matter
of weight, Joe Borrell and Eddie Mevolro
finally have como to terms, and they will
meet at tho Nonpareil A. C, December 10,
nt catch weights. Borrell wanted to box
Hevolre at 15S pounds, ringside.
Tho bouts preceding the Benny Kaufman-Joe
O'Nell match at the Broadway
tomorrow night follow: llltz Walters vs.
Billy Horn, Hock Bones vs. John Hol
land, Peggy Sullivan vs. Jack Brady and
IVhltey Beamer vs. Iteddy Bell.
Harry Lenny, of this city, has under
taken the Eastern managerial reins of
Sammy Taylor, tho Detroit knockout ar
tlst. Lenny Is trying to match Taylor
with Joe Azevedo in New York.
The wind-up at tho Quaker City Friday
night will bring together Howard Trues
dale, of Kensington, and Tyrone Costello,
of North Penn.
Following hla vicious battle with Jimmy
Murphy here. Ad Wolgast left for New
"York. The Mlchtgander may meet Leach

' between the public high cehonts and the
Interacndemlr l.eaKiie, tennis, as Is sen-
orally the custom. As most of the Inter-
academic Lcaguo and Independent teams
In Philadelphia and vicinity lutvo played
members of tho public school league or
teams which have met "tho Dig Three,"
It was po.slbto to get a good line on tho
relative ability of nil who played In this
section.
Peddlo Institute, Attnntlo city High,
Perklomen Seminary, Allentowti Prep and
a few other elevens which met local
teams are not Included In the selection.
They nro not considered III the Philadel
phia division in scholastic football.
Tho boys picked for this eleven are
selected for their vnluo to their teams
during the entire season. It was also
tho nlm of the Rvmnino J.iJtHirm to select
boys whose style of play would colnrlde.
III other words, It Is a team nltli one
kicker, oi.e forward passer, etc., and two
or three men whose Individual work In
particular departments wcio not consid
ered In preference to other players
whoso work was superior In other de
partments. MOOMR A KlCKF.lt.
As on Instance, Jim Moore, of Haver
ford, was selected for n halfback posi
tion because of his marvelous kicking.
With Moore on tho team no other klekcr
Is necessary, and a player whose greatest
asset Is punting hnd lo surpass tho other
harks In nil other departments to bo
chosen.
Two lads frnin the Mnln Lino stood out
nhovo all other ends during the Inst sea
son. Tln-y wero Saxmnn, of St. Luke's,
and Lewis, of Haverford. There was not
a game during tho entire season In
which their work did not stand out above
any other end on the Held. Moth com
blno brilliant open field work, such as
receiving forward passes nnd getting
down the field under kicks nell, with
great ability to smash Interference nnd
slzo up plays.
For tho Becond team Bradley, of Cen
tral High, and Shctlzllne, of IVnn Char
ter, aro selected. Thero wero several ends
more brilliant 111 tho open Held, hut for
steady, consistent work and ability to
break up plays this pair stood out. Other
star ends wero O'Neill, of La Snlle;
Scholcs, of West I'hlily; Walton, of Kpls
copal; Brown, of Penn Charter: DeLong,
of Central High, and Writes, of North
east. O'Neill's Inck of weight prevented
him from earning a first-team position.
Farmakls, of Central High, switched
from guard to tackle In mldseason, nnd
Killiitty, of Haverford, were tho leading
tackles. Farmakls easily outplayed every
opponent ho met, whllo Hlllntty proved
conclusively that lie was entitled to a
position by his brilliant work through
out tho season: He shone particularly In
tho Hill School game
LL'BIN AND SMITH.
For tho second team, Lubln, of South
ern High, and Smith, of West riillly, nro
given tho call over llnce, of Clormantown;
nilev, of lentrul High: Mtennan, of Ln
Snlle: Cunningham and Smith, of West
Phllly. who formed a powerful team;
Snngrce, of Penn Charter, and Gardner
nnd Thomas, of Northeast.
Had Lubln been more experienced, ho
would have been tho best man of tho
field, aa ho has moro nnturnl strength
nnd ability. Ho failed to box tho ends as
well as Farmakls and Glllatty and his
work was not quite so smooth.
Central High and Haverford ngnin en
ter the limelight with tho selections for
tho guard position. First honors go to
Tyson, of the Main Lino institution,
while Ruppleo. of the Crimson and Hold,
was Just a trifle behind. Tho latter
played with a fractured hand In the two
big games of tho season, but this did not
prevent him from easily outplaying
strong opponents.
McCnrthy. or Catholic High, nnd CHI
more, of West Phllly, are tho choices for
the second team. Both wero handicapped
by having weak men playing beside them
or they might have hustled the first te.un
selections, Llpnlncott. of Episcopal:
Diamond, of St. Joseph; T. Wharton, of
Chestnut Hill; Kreckr. of Central High,
and Cutler, of Germantown, descrvo hon
orable mention.
Thero was one centre who stood out
head nnd shoulders nbovo nil others and
ho was playing in the centre of a weak
line. This was Whltaker, of Northeast
High. Hi- Is an excellent collcglato pros
pect. Whltaker played a roving centre
nnd usually made half of the tackles In
the open Held. He passed well, opened
up large holes and Interfered beautifully.
no irequenuy went inrougn nna spi eo
tho secondary backs, malting possible
long gains ny tno docks.
Emmnl. of Haverford, Is socund choice
over Armstrong, of Central High. Tho I
latter had weight and height on the I
Main Lino lad, but the aggressiveness and ,
experience of Kmmal gavo him the call.
This trio of pivot men stood out above
all others so much that there was little
room for comparison.
FEW GOOD QUARTERS.
The field of good quarterbacks wns far
smaller during the past season than in
years. As a usual thing the quarterbacks
on local teams have been brilliant stars,
but this season the quarter material was
lacking. There were a, few, however, who
compared favorably with the greatest
ever turned out. "Doc" Applegate, al
though Ineligible for Interacndemlo
League contests, was given first choice, as
he was one of the cleverest all-round
backs seen In local ranks In years.
Weighing 16 pounds and possessing a
great football brain, Applegate was in
valuable to his team. With him In the
game Episcopal had one of the beet teams
In the city. After he was declared In
eligible the team went to pieces.
Applegate would be the forward passer
of this eleven. Ha. is not only a won
derful handler of the ball but has a gteat
head nnd the passes would surely be
cleverly executed with him engineering
the play.
Myron Wharton, of Chestnut Hill, Is
the pltot of the second team. Leading
either central ingn or jiaverroru this
youngster might have hustled Applegate
for a first team position. He needed
more protection In the back Held than hie
teammates were able to give him. Ills
work was consistently brilliant, however,
and he was selected in preference to
Howell, of Haverford; Sullivan of Catho
lic High; Sargeant, of St. Lukes; Plersol,
of Penn Charter; Itoseneau, of Central
High; KUtler, of West Phllly; Paul, of
Northeast, and a few others.
For the other backfield positions there
was a wealth of material. Including Jim
Moore and Benham, of Haverford; But
ler. Voss and Gotwals, of Central High;
Sitley and Walsh, of Penn Charter;
Holmes, of Germantown; Glascott, of
Catholic High: Mahoney, of La Salle:
Weisaad, of St. Joseph; Kosetsky, of
Southern; Hedelt and Kinsman, of North
cast. Hugo and Clark, of West Phllly,
and numerous- others.
Holmes, Moore and Butler are selected
for all-round efficiency. Thero were sev
eral better ground gaining backs than
Butler, but his grand defensive play, ln
terfvriaj and short two plunclne tank
