TItY TO STOP WIDENING
OF EPISCOPAL BREACH
Attempt Mnda to Havo Church Dig

NBW fonK, Oot S7.-Hfforts were be
ing made today to prevent ft. widening
of tho breneh In tho Protestnnt Episcopal
Church that resulted In tho resignation
yesterday of three bishops and two other
members of tho IJotird of Missions.
Peaceful overtures wore mado before
tho missions body reconvened today.
Several leading church dignitaries were
attempting to bring about n, compromise
and chum tho withdrawal of tho resig
nations. The five churchmen who resigned acted
after they had failed to stop the Board
of Missions from voting to send dele
gates to tho Pan-Protestant Congress to
be held In Panama In February. Bishop
Reginald II. Wcller, of Fond du Lao,
wis., declared such nctlon by tho Hpls
copal Church constituted an affront to
tho Itoman Catholic Church, since the
object of the Pnn-Amorlcon Congress wns
to devise ways for bringing the peoples
of Central and South America to tho
Protestant fnlth.
Four other dignitaries who resigned
with Bishop Weller held tho samo views
ond added that tho Pan-American Con
gress not only wns hostllo to tho Boman
Catholic Church, but would delay tho
arrival of a union of nil Christian
churches. Tho four others who resigned
were: Bishop Alfred Harding, of Wash
ington, V. C; Bishop Williams, of Mnr
quette. Mich.; tho nev. Dr. William T.
Manning, of Trinity Church, Now York,
nnd tho Bcv. Scldcn P. Delnney, Dean of
All Saints' Cathedral, Milwaukee.
Replying to theso attacks, George
Wharton Pepper, of Philadelphia, and
other lay nr.d clerical members jtt the
board denied that tho object of tho con
gress wns to nntngonlzo the Bomnn
Catholic Church.

That tlie German law will remove a con

Tho story Is oasy to suggest. The

In tho screen version William Elliott
