WALL STREET WAS IMPRESSED
BY GOOD SHOWING OP U. S. STEEL
Although Earnings for Third Quarter Were Not Up to
Expectations, They Were Regarded as Favor
ableStocks Closed Weak
NEW YORK. Oct. 27.
Wall street today devoted a great deal of Its time to analyzing the state
ment of the United States Steel Corporation for the third (nmrtcr of tho
year While the earnings for the period. J38.710.644. were not up to what had
been expected In many quarters, estimates having run from $40,000,000 upward,
they nevertheless created a favorable Impression on the Street. The fact thnt
dividends were not resumed on the common stock, there being a Burplus of
$18,037,241 against $89,479 for the snmo quarter of 1914 was disappointing to
tiome people, but as a rule the action of the directors In withholding any
payment at this time met with favor, ns It gave the Impression that the
corporation had decided to bo more conservative, By doing so, It was pointed
out, and building up a surplus It will be easier to continue payments to stock
holders, at least something, through lean ns well as fat years.
Whtn It Is taken Into consideration that the earnings which tho corpora
tion reported were entirely from "legitimate" business that Is to say, for
products fcr domestic consumption, rails, axles, etc., no war otdcrs having
as yet beer token the showing U even much better than It would at first
seem The demand for all classes of steel has been on the increase for some
time now, nnd the outlook Is thnt the demand will become even greater Instead
of diminishing. Thus It will be sen that the Steel Corporation Is In a
Very good position to All all of the orders which come Its way, not being
burdened by any war orders.
Going into the earnings Just reported and taking Into consideration the
tact that higher prices for products are now being received, tho showing for the
fourth qunrter should be even better than the last one. Karnlngs for the last
period should, according to tho present outlook, be cIomo to $45,000,000, and
some people hold that $50,000,000 would not be surprising.
In the early trading today the stock market showed some ptrencth. but It
wus not maintained for long, aa heavy pressure was brought to bar. particularly
against Steel and tho war specialties, resulting In weakness In tho Intter, Dcth-
icnem btcei losing 21 points. Specialties were oft three to Beven points. Rumors
that Germany wus suing for peaco on her own terms weie usoil to depress tho
bpcclaltles Stocks were well taken and there wns nothing to suggest that mora
than n temporary reaction was In progress. Several big speculators have taken
the bear side and shrewd observers talk of a period of rest around hN level.
In a broad way It Is obvious that Wall street, using tho term In Its narrow
Honse, has failed In Its market calculations because It has failed to understand
tho real character of the present maiket. Tho closing of the market todiy
was weak.
A new feature of the market is the strength of the coppers. The market
In Anaconda. Utah und tho rest of the group Is broader and stronger than
has been tho case for many a. day. A vast amount of bullish matter is now
appearing In the literature offyVall street In regard to the merits of the copper
group, and apparently It is succeeding In diverting a certain amount of specula
tive Interest. Stocks like Utnh. Chlno, Anaconda, Ray Consolidated and In
spiration have been accumulated In large blocks by strong Interests, and sooner
or later a demonstration In them is expected. As far as the large professional
and scmlprofesslonal trading element Is concerned, it would only be necessary
to put prices up sharply to attract a following. Tho attitude of outside specu
lators might also be expected to change from apparent indifference once the
market wns made prominent.
