roads, led by Canadian Pacific, which was up nearly four points, were notnbly
stronR. Realizing sales were not confined to n few Isiues. but worts Ronornl
throughout tho list. Late In the day there was ronowed sollliiB, and stocks
sold off all along the line, llcthlehem Steel was oft 20 from the final of yes
terdn, but recovered Just before tho close.
Of tho railroad group Hrle was the oustnndlng feature, as far ns nctlvlty
was concerned, crossing 40 for the first time since 1907. Although Its advance
for tho session was not ns great by any menns ns other rnIK a great dco.1 of
Interest was attached to It, In connection with that Issue there wni a roport
that a secret meeting of tho Hrle oltlclals was held nt tho Hotel Ulltmoro on
Sunday night, at which matters of grent Importnnco to the company's wel
fare were considered, Tho spectaclo of Urlo raised to the position of tho
cornerstone In the speculation In tho rails naturally caused somo skepticism
among old traders, who havo seen similar rises In Erie before on dividend
talk. Uut It must be remembered that the old Erie hits gone nnd a new
one hns taken Its place. The Intensive management of Underwood Is now
bearing fruit, nnd this, coupled with the Immense business from Chicago In
supplies, Is giving the road tho largest earnings In Its history.
Many rumors were In circulation on tho floor pertaining to several stocks
on the list For Virginia-Carolina Chemical n, new high mark for tho year
was reached when the stock touched 52. It was snld that dividends may bo
resumed next year. Aside from tho fact that it moved up a fraction, there
was little doing In Colorado Kuel, although n report had it that tho com
pany would enter the Mldvale Steel combination. This report was received
with a great deal of Interest, nnd In somo quarters It was given somo credence.
Reports of new combinations hao becomo so frequent, especially lately, that
the Street has learned to take them with a grain of salt.
United States Steel was actively traded In, and for tho most part It
as strong. The Street nwalted with Interest tho outcomo of the meeting
of the corporation's directors, which takes plnced this afternoon after tho close.
While In many quarters tho belief was expressed that some action would be
taken on tho matter of resuming dividends on the stock, It wns held In others
that nothing would bo done at this time and that action would be postponed
until tho Jnnuary meeting. Nothing definite could be learned with regard
to this, none of the directors Inning anything to say. The earnings, which
havo been arIously estimated nt 40,000,000 and upward for the third quarter,
arc expected to be good.
The copper group was stronger nnd more active than for some time past.
This Is worth nothing. For many weeks the nctlon of tho copper shares has
been extremely disconcerting to their friends. Although the price of copper
metal Is now considerably higher than It was last April, prices of the lead
ing stocks, with the exception of Inspiration, are lower.
Carnegie Company Advances Steel Prices
The Carnegie Steel Company has advanced bars, plates nnd shapes $1
per ton to 1 cents per pound, Pittsburgh, and hoops $3 per ton to 1 cents.
Virtually all the other mills are making a similar advance In bars, plates and
chapes, but some mills are still quoting tho old price on hoops.
These advances make bars $2 per ton higher than they went In the last
rise in 1912, while plates and shapes are at the same level as attained on
that rise.

NEW TOIIK, Oct. 26. Cotton opened
easy this morning, at a decline of 1 to 4
points. There was selling for Wall street
account, but the buying was of sufficient
volume to prevent further losses. There
was considerable bullish sentiment, and
after the call the demand Increased,
causing prices to move upward The
weather in the belt was considered favor
able. The cables from Liverpool wera
disappointing.
In the afternoon the tone became weak
er and prices slipped off until levels of
13 to 15 points below Monday's close had
been reached
The market ended weak, off 20 to 25

CHICAGO, Oct. K Yesterday's bulge
of 4 cents In tho wheat market was fol
lowed by an easier tono at the opening
today nnd prices fell off gradually In the
early hours. Bulls, however, predicted
nnother rise in the near future.
Outside markets displayed weakness,
which was reflected In tho local market.
AVInters wero off, vvMth springs a trifle
lower. There nppenred to be an abund
anco of May for sale before noon. Sales
wero scattered. Weather reports con
tinued favorable and receipts heavy.
The domestic demand Is Increasing, with
the foreign situation still nervous. Big
shorts who rushed to cover yesterday
were apparently satisfied and were con
spicuous by their absence today.
In the afternoon, after prices had de
clined about two cents, there were par
tial rallies, so that final figures were
only fractionally below last night's closings.
