Those attending the confererice, In ad
dition to Director Loeb and the Mayor,
were Assistant Director MUrphy, Inspec
tor Thomas r. Bolahd, Chief PJkc. of
the Electrical Bureau: Superintendent
Seltzer, of the Philadelphia Gchcrnl Hos

This statement and the Information
that the Mayor hod tjoen fully satisfied
about the coal purchases by-tho depart
ment were the only things given out
after tho conference. It was said, how
ever, that tho flat dental made by the
Director last night still stands, It will
be made stronger In his statement.
Director Loeb had Intended to leave the
city today, to return Mohday. He also
had Intended to defer his public state
ment until that time. Mayor Blankcn
burg, however, caused him to change his
-. planB. The Maydr reached his office
'early and started an immediate Investi
gation, summoning the Director, his as
sistant and the others to a special con
ference. It Is understood that tho final
evidence of the records was gone over
thoroughly at this meeting.
McLaughlin, who is at present the at
torney for the Republican City Commit
tee, at a meeting held last night in tho
James A. Garfield Club, 3d street below
Olrard avenue, r6ad what purported to bo
an affidavit signed by Joseph D. Barker,
chief engineer In the Bureau of Charities,
In which It was charged that for several
months coal supplied to the Philadelphia
General Hospital was Inferior to tfiat
stipulated In tho contracts, while pay
ments were made for a higher priced
product.
A previous statement by Director Loeb
was as follows: '
"This charge Is ridiculous and Is very
far-fetched. No warrants were (signed
by me at any time which were not ap
proved by the heads of the departments
or those In authority to O. K. bills.
"The Rogers-Corr Company, the lowest
bidder for the. contracts in question, was
penalized whenever tho coal averaged un
der the standard set by the specifications.
Several tests were made by different out
side experts, as well as the city chemists,
and all of them are on record In City Hall
and may be examined there.
"Also the railroad manifests, car num
bers and mine tickets, and everything In
connection with the mining and delivery
of the coal Is on fllo In my office or with
the chiefs of the various bureaus.
"This man Barker, tho engineer at the
Philadelphia Hospital, has on several oc
casions displayed an overzeal forcertaln
trademarked articles and fittings, etc.,
hick tended toward favoritism to certain
contractors, and I was compelled to 'ad
monish him severely."

Young Farmer Dies as Result of
Automobile Accident
LANCASTER, Pa Oct. 23. While
George Clarke, a joung farmer, of Dun
tree, was nutomoblllng last night with a
party of friends, Ills car was upset near
Toughkenamon when It hit a culvert
abutment.
Clarke's rib was broken and pierced his
keart, and his -death followed this morn
ing. Clinton Miller was badly Injured.

cording to this week's report of the Bu
reau of Health, Thlrty-rive new cases

Seven deaths resulted from typhoid, a
compared with two last week.
The number of death In tho city, from
all causes, was iw, n. decrease of 88 from
the 498 reported durlnpt the preceding
la-". and an Increasa Of four oVer
the total shown for the corresponding
week last year. The deaths Were divided
as follows: Males, 190; females, 211; boys,
M; girls, C3.

Baron Ongley Meets Death in Wil
mington Hotel
WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 23.-Baron
Ongley, 41 years old, manager for Scl
wyn & Co.. of Now York, or Julia
Arthur's company In "The Eternal Mag
dalene," was killed early this morning
by falling from & third-story window In
the. Hotel duPont. It is supposed that ho
had attempted to raise tho window to
udmlt fresh air and, losing his balance,
fell out.
All thnt Is knonn of tho matter Is that
some of the hotel employes heard tho
fall and, rushing out, found the man on
tho Market street Bldewalk. Hotel em
ployes arid police who appeared about
the same tlmp .summoned an ambulance
and the man was sent to tho Delaware
Hospital, whore he died In a few min
utes. ' Julia Arthur presented the new play
for the first time at the playhouse hero
last night. Ongley was tho manager of
the company. Nothing is known of him
here, except that he lived In New York
and was well known In tho theatrical
business.

A little neighborly controversy that has
been waging across the fence which sep
arates the houses at 107-109 Meehan ave
nue. Mount Airy, was nlred In Magis
trate Pennock's office today by tho par
ticipants, when Mrs. Nellie Trumbar. of
107, caused the arrest ot Mrs. Annie
Kennedy, of WO.

Mrs Kennedy "made faces" at her
neignnor, wno is many years younger
than'' rhfc is. She also prematurely sea
soned the tomatoes Mrs. Trumbar was
growing In her backyard, Mrs. Trumbar
said, by putting salt on the vegetables as
they grew. The offense which finally led
to thp arrest Is the alleged attack by
Mrs. Kennedy on her neighbor "with a
WfO hit pf a stick," Mrs. Trumbar said
She rezcud -the sttc1; from her neighbor's
hande. and that the attack was then con
tinued with a dust brush.
Mrs. Kennedy was held In 1300 ball to
keep the peace.

Motorist Charges False Pretense
'After Paying $3000 as Investment
Jfarry Vortkamp. who gave his address
as Dayton, Ohio, was arrested last nlpht
In his office. In the Real Estate Trust
Building, accused of obtaining money un
der false pretences. His arrest was
caused, by Stewart Foltz,, of 1617 Summer
street, who- declares that Vortkamp ob
tained 13000 from him for investment in
the. National United Service Company, of
which the prisoner Is the local repre
sentative. Th.e concern Is known as a mututal au
tomobile relief association and is sup
posed tb supply aid to all members who
meet with automobile mishaps.
The police say that other complaints
have been made against the concern rep
resented by the prisoner, and they expect
several witnesses to appear against him
when he is arraigned today before Mag
istrate Honey.
Vortkamp, according to the police, rep
resented to Investors that the company
had US stations throughout tho country,
end it Is said but three stations were
actually located. Oho of these Is at Broad
and CallowH)l streets, another in Pitta
burgh and another in Buffalo.
Tho Ideal promoter, it Is said, also rep
resented that the company was capital
ized at'jIHiOOO.
