STEEL TRADE tfOW WATCHED
WITH INTEREST BY EVERYONE
Heavy Demand for Products Has Resulted in Advance
in Prices Orders Total About 600,000 Tons.
Prices of Stocks Irregular
NKW YOIIK, Oct. 23.
Tho outstanding feature In tho present situation Is tho steel trade. Every
where throughout tho country It is being watched with a ?roat deal of
interest. Orders for nil classes of steol Vinrs, plates, shapes and rails are
beginning to como In faster than tho steel mills can turn them out. It Is
estimated that tho various mills now have orders aggregating at least 600,000
tons, and tho big majority of this Is to bo used in tho construction of rail
road cars. During tho last year or so tho railroads hao not been buying
much steel for replacement fo- tho principal reason that earnings wero not
good during that period. Tho time has now come, howoxor, when old
equipment nnd rails must be replaced. Earnings of the vnrloui carriers nro
now showing up much hotter, and they are In a position to buy.
As a direct result of tho heavy demand for different kinds of products,
no little amount of it being for tho manufacture of war munitions, there has
been a steady ndvance in steel prices. This week, for Instance, leading mills
advanced tho price of nil wire products ?2 a ton. This makes tho highest
price in six years for wlro nails and the highest in nino years on fence --Ire.
Wire rods at the present quotation nro held at $32 in Pittsburgh.
In the stock market tho advlco of brokers to customers that they guard
Egalnst overspeculatlon is being dally disregarded. Most of tho efforts of
brokers havo been to keep the trading in tho specialties down to a
minimum; that is, trying to keep customers from overextendlng their accounts,
and ono of tho steps taken has been tho exacting of higher margins. This
had some effect for the moment, but tho public has now returned In increas
ing numbers, it seems, with more money, tho luro of big profits being too
great for them to resist.
Stock market operations wero Irregular today. New high records were
established by Baldwin and General Motors, tho former advancing more than
Ave points and the latter exactly H points. Later Baldwin fell under profit
taking sales, losing all of Its advanco nnd seven points more. Studebakcr
was also weak lato in tho day. Activity was on a large scale throughout the
two-hour session. The railroad shares wero firmer than they have been for
some time past. September gross earnings of tho Southern Pacific, which
were given out today, showed an increase in gross of $1,340,719 and $828,911
in net. The average loans of the members of tho Clearing House, according
to tho weekly statement, showed an Increase of $134,560,000 and net demand
deposits increased $146,957,000. The actual loans Increased $46,023,000, and
the net demand deposits rose $42,589,000.
WHEAT MARKET
INCLINED TO SAG
Favorable Weather in the Grain
Districts and Heavy Arrivals
the Chief Factors
CHICAGO, Oct. 23. -Wheat continued its
general weakness at the opening today,
nd December slipped below a dollar In
the early hours. The undertone grew
stronger, following limited nuctuatlons,
and a more buoyant spirit was evinced.
T.ck of confidence by lorigs, who sold
freely, favorable weather in tho grain
districts, and continued heavy arrivals
were some of the factors in bringing on
the early decline. Irregular trading Is
expected while the present weather con
tinues. Premiums were easier. December
was off over 2 cents at the close, and
Hay was down nearly 2 cents.
Corn and oats followed wheat's de
pression, and tightened In sympathy with
the bulge. Corn sold freely, but was
featureless. Heavy arrivals of oats and
Increased stocks made the undertone
nervous.
Exports of wheat for tho week were
reported at 11,113.000 bushels against 10,
638.000 bushels last week, and 6,136,000
bushels in the same period of last year.
The Impression is, that a considerable
proportion of the exports were of
Canadian origin. The quality of arriving
wheat is causing no little complaint.
Liverpool was saved from the reflected
American weakness by the scarcity of
spot, which supported the undertone. It
was higher, with cargoes Arm. Reserves
are disappearing.

OFFICIAL CALL MONEY BATE
CUT Td 3 PER CENT. BY LOCAL BANK
New High Records for Pennsylvania Steel Common and
Baldwin Locomotive Stock and Bonds.
Latter May Be Called
Official announcement this morning by
ono of tho Urge downtown banks reduc
ing the rate on call loans to 3 per cent,
was not altogether unexepected, but
nevertheless created a favorablo Impres
sion In tho local financial district. For
some time past money has been offered
to brokers at the lower rate, but this was
tho first regular statement to that effect.
Tho last previous "official" call rate desig
nated by the banks and trust compnnlos
of this city was 4 per cent. In Feb
ruary, but of course, for many months
moat new transactions wero tit 3H per
cent.
Encouraged by the lenient attltuue of
the banks, local brokers proceeded to bid
up stocks today and two new high records
were established, Pennsylvania Steel
common going to 100, nnd Baldwin Loco
motive to 154. The 5 per cent, bonds of
the latter were also In strong demand,
opening at 103U. and advancing to 107.
Tho movement In the latter was based
upon tho report that the company would
sell to Mldvale the land and buildings at
EddyBtone, now under lease to the Rem
ington Arms Company. The bonds would
have to bo redeemed as they have a Hen
on this property. They are callable at
10714.
Talk of war orders filled the Street,
nnd many weird tales of profits were
heard. It was said, for Instance, that
the du Ponts' output Was sold out as far
ahead as 1917, and that new and even
larger plants were contemplated. That
the profits on war orders are not all they
are sometimes supposed to be was Illus
trated today, by the member of an Im
portant "local Industrial concern, which
recently sublet a large contract for
shrapnel shells to a smaller company.
Out of the first consignment of 6000 Bhells
turned out by the latter only 200 passed
the Inspector, and tho remainder were
thrown In the scrap heap. This, of
course. Is an exceptional case, but never
theless gives food for thought to the
optimists who can see only one side of
the v. ar order business.
Gossip had It that there was a sort of
contest on for control of Pennsylvania
Steel Company between the Donner and
Schwab Interests. The 'former Is said
to have so far met all the latter's bids
and ns he has an option on the Reading
and Pennsylvania stock holdings there
may yet be seen a combination of the
Cambria and Pennsylvania Steel Com
panies. Cambria shares were active and
a trifle heavy on Change, nor was there
a resumption of yesterdais pyrotechnics
In the local traction Issues, both of which
showed profit taking. Buffalo and Sus
quehanna Issues, however, extended their
recent advances several points further.
