Death Notices on Page 13
By the Photoplay Editor
Forty-flvo cnts, black, white, yellow,
gray, eltm and fat, old and young, left
their happy home nt Blde-a-Wee, 419 East
3Sth street, New York city, the other day
and went out Irt a big automobile to the
Gaumont studio at Flushing, to appear
with Cissy Fitzgerald In a. motion picture,
"A Comer In Cats," for tho Mutual pro
gram. Edwin Mlddlcton, director of the
comedy, after using every cat he could
hire at tho rate of five cents n day, found
thnt he still lacktd about 45. So ho
telephoned Mrs. II. U. Klbbe, president
of tho Blde-a-Wco home, which Mrs.
George II. Gould, Mrs. Ulysses Grant,
nhd a number of other prominent society
women nre Interested In. Ho was offered
the cats free of charge, If he would return
them In tho same good condition ho took
them away In.
The picture 'A Corner In Cats." tells
tho sad tale of tho results of greed. Two
enterprising crooks go to a new town nnd
hlro a big hall. They put up a sign to
tho effect that they will pay money for
cats. Tho countryside quickly rids Itself
of felino pets. Then when tho rats nnd
mlco over-run tho place, they have to
purchaso their cats back at a much
fancier price than they so hurriedly sold
them at.
Tho returns In the fly-swatting contest
nt tho Vltaqraph plant In Flatbush, which
has been going on all summer, havo been
tabulated and Hughle Mack Is found to
havo won the tin cup offered for tho
greatest number of files swatted. He was
considered an odds-on favorite nnyway,
partly because of his area, thu size of Ufa
swatters, and because of his natural
tendency to sit still and give tho files a
chance to light.
Mr. S. F Nixon, managing director of
the Forrest Theatre, whero "The Rlrth of
a Nation" Is the current attraction, an
nounces the transfer of tho engagement
of that photo spectacle nt Pittsburgh
from tho Nixon Theatre there to the
Miles Theatre. The success of "Tho
Birth of a Nation" In Pittsburgh was so
great that Mr. Nixon was compelled to
find a new placo to show tho films when
booking arrangements made Impossible
continuance of the engagement at the
Nixon. Necessity for tho change In book
ing arrangements nt Pittsburgh was duo
to the fact that Frances Starr, In "Mario
Odlle," had been booked nt the Nixon. It
is interesting in this connection to learn
that "The Birth of n Nation," at St.
Louis, recently was transferred from tho
Olympic Theatre to the Garrlck In order
to provldo accommodation for an Incom
ing attraction.
