They Establish That Men of Wealth Have Confidence.
aaie or w right Aeroplane Company Latest.
Setback in Stocks
, , .. , . . NEW YORK. Oct. 14.
Deals like the aalo of the Wright Aeroplane Company keep speculation
alive. They rtppcftl to tho Imagination, for one thing. For nnother, they
establish tho Important fact that men of wealth now have confidence. They
have tested the Investment and speculative markets and have proved that
big corporations i may bo organized and at once attract that public support
without which tho filiation of a now corporation Is Impossible
Mldvale Steel and Ordnance was an Instant success. Speculators were
charmed by tho big names In the company and allured by Its plans, though
these wore only dimly outlined, with the result that tho stock, of a par value
of 60, sold at 77 on tho second day of trading In It. There Is a charm about
""' . li "I .: . "V "" "n--u aDout possibilities of aeroplane develop
, merit that. It Is believed, wilt lead to active bidding for the now aeroplane
stock ns soon as It Is offered.
, A member of tho syndicate which bought the Wright business compares
the Present stage of tho aeroplano business with the early stages of tho auto
mobile business. The early years of that Industry wero years of Invention
rather than of business success, and financial embarrassments were many
until the business became stabilised, and capital flew Into it In a large way.
go with tho aeroplano In this country. While Inventions and Improvements
have been many, tho manufacturing companies have not developed tho com
mercial side of the business In any way commensurate with the visions that
any one may conceive of tho possibilities of development.
W. B. Thompson, who heads tho aeroplane syndicate. Is one of tho men
who first sensed tho chango In American business as a result of the war Ho
took ono fair-sized fortuno out of Electric Boat and another out of In
Bplratlon Copper. Ho Is a man of imagination, but a precise business man
for all that, and his associates In tho syndicate think that he will develop the
aeroplano business to tho limit of Its possibilities.
Liberal realising brought about a setback in 'stocks on tho Exchange In
the trading today. There was not as great a demand for securities as has been
tho case for somo tlmo past, and there was more of a disposition among traders
to tako some of the rroflts which have been realized on the recent uplift. This
was particularly true of tho railroad shares, although tho losses In that group
were not large. Thero was a rather freo supply at concessions.
A largo contributing factor In tho downturn was that securities wew. being
sold by London in connection with tho arrangements of the loan commission
In its program for steadying sterling exchango rates. The heaviest sales of
this character wore In United States Steel, Anaconda, Union Pacific. Canadian
Pacific and Southern Pacific. Tho largest losses wero suffered by the
specialties.
General Motors, for instance, dropped 11 points below tho final of yes
tcrday. after having gone eight points higher, while Baldwin lost over seven
points. During the morning both Bethlehem Steel and Studebaker soared
to new high levels, tho latter becoming weak In the afternoon. There was
a sensational leap of 27 points In South Porto Rico Sugar. Some of the' gain
was lost In tho final dealings. The closing was Irregular.
Steel Prices Again Advanced
Some Eastern- makers aro now getting Sl.45. Pittsburgh, on bar plates
and structural, an advance of i per ton over the minimum made by Central
West makers. Demand in tho East Is far greater than the production, and
higher prices are predicted. Cast-iron plpo was raised Jl a ton today

WASHINGTON. Oct. M.Tlollnr .

up tho machinery for such a system in
the form of world-wide trade and bank
ing relations, extension of foreign com

United States at this time." said the ns

mean that sterling is depressed every
where. Furthermore, the fact that ster

not sufficient to depress the value of
the British pound everywhere, simply
because the trade Influences of the United
States aro not felt everywhere."

GRAINS EASIER;
BIG SALE OF OATS
Favorable Weather and Increas
ed Country Movements Tend
ed to Weaken Wheat
CHICAGO, Oct .-An easier tone pre
yaned In the grain market at the open
ing today. Trading in the early hours
was featureless. Variations in prices were
comparatively slight. Favorable weather
rrom the chief ffraln-growlng centres
and Increasing country movements were
forthcoming. Commission houses ap
peared to have lota of selling orders,
with buyers going along cautiously, but
it is believed by some that a bull market
Is in the making, caused by the increas
ing speculative Interests, and traders are
advising freedom from short selling at
this time.
Prices continued to ease off during most
of the afternoon, and the close was about
two cents below yesterday's nnat figures.
It Is reported that shorts In December
corn are getting nervous at the increas
ing scarcity of contract corn. Prices to
day were fairly firm at the opening, with
Indications that they would follow the
trend of wheat prices.
Exports reported totaled 1,600,000 bushels
of Manltobas and 200,000 bushels of
Durum; 500,000 bushels of oats. Chicago
cash handlers sold 15,000 bushels ot wheat,
95,000 bushels of corn and 225.000 bushels
of oats, of which 110.000 bushels wore for
seaboard delivery.

Buoyant Drop in Baldwin
The Inquiry for bonds, according to In

and one has to hark back some seven or
eight years to find an equal volume of
demand for hlgh-grado securities. Cap

companies were subject to governmental
Interference Ori top of that, since tho
war began to be reflected by heavy in

Tho Hood of foreign liquidation of
American securities during tho first year
of the war naturally sent quotations to
levels which made them attractive, and
In the laat six months public absorption
of bonds lias been steadily Increasing.
Now the supply Is becoming scarcer and
prices are advancing Gains from tho
low points In the hlgh-grado Issues range
from 2 to 7 points and new Issues nro
being oversubscribed for. The low ex

market, and considerable blocks of se
curities havo been sought from these
sources. Of course, tho grent bulk of
this class of business Is dono prlvntely
"over the counter," but thero hns nlso
been a very fair volume of transactions
through the local stock exchange.
Today tho general tone of tho Phila

no great volume of offerings was forth
