in Market '
NEW YORK, Oct. 8.
Efforts of brokers to Tmv thetr customers switch from tlio war specialties
to the moro standard Issues, such as tho railroad shares, appear to have
been successful at last. Judging from the action of tho rails In the stock
market today. While there was a resumption of tho wild trading In tho
specialties In the early hours, there was a gradual shifting of Interest to
tho carriers, and In tho afternoon session they had becomo tho outstanding
features, advances ranging from ono to 6H points. On tho other hand, war
stocks sagged off a trlflo from tho high point, and In tho case of Bethlehem
Steel, which had bounded up nlno points to a now high mark of 409, there
WM a sharp reaction that carried it 14 points from tho closo of yesterday.
Reading was ono of tho most active Issues In tho railroad group and
cored tho largest gain, at ono tlmo being up 6 points from tho final of
yesterday, while .Lehigh Valley gained an oven flvo points, and Its advanco
was helped by tho optimistic statements made in various quarters of tho
Street that thero was a good prospect that tho 10 per cent, dividend could
sow bo considered cntlroly secure, due to tho Improvement in tho general
business conditions. The copper shares wcro also strong, but not to such
Bin extent as tho rails. Tho closing found tho railroads strong, whllo the
Industrials went off, tho market being Irregular.
Thero was nothing In the market to indicate that steps had been taken by
(the Exchange to curb tho wild trading In tho war specialties, and thero was evl
Bence that tho public had returned In largo numbers. Although larger margins

Wade conditions
show improvement
(Cotton Yarns Advancing.
Greater Activity in Hard
ware Leather in Demand
In the local cotton-yarn trade conditions
how an improvement over the previous
week. Cotton is still advancing, and In
some cases certain numbers of cotton
yarns have shown an advance of 6 to 6
cents since August Manufacturers, how
ever, are not buying as heavily as some
dealers anticipated on a rising market
This Is attributed to tho fact that but
few manufacturers havo any large or
ders ahead, but are working from hand
to mouth. Conditions generally appear
to be better than for some time past, ac
cording to It. R. Dun & Co., and a good
feeling prevails.
Jobbers of woolens and cotton piece
goods selling principally to the local
manufacturers state that the market Is
advancing and sales have shown an In
crease. Wholesalers of dry goods report
also more activity In business and a
slight Improvement in collections. Manu
facturers of cloaks and suits state there
is a slight Increase In sales, but the trado
is disposed to buy sparingly. Shirt waist
and dress manufacturers state there
Is a fair demand and they are looking
forward to a good season's business. Job
bers in hosiery, underwear, etc., state
that the last week or 10 days' sales have
shown on increase, but collections are
slow. Manufacturers of men's and boys'
clothing state that weather conditions
affected soles somewhat, although during
the last week there has been some little
Improvement
The leather market continues active,
prices Arm, and only moderate stocks are
reported, better grades being In demand.
Glazed kid dealers report a fairly active
trade and prices Arm. Shoe dealers report
ales somewhat Improved and an increas

Brokers offices continued crowded

dicating a heavy Increase in public de

small lots of stock In the large majority
of cases pay for them outright, and take

that this development has reached a pro
portion that counts In stabilizing the
market. Tho new rulo mado recently In
New York Is said to have been due to this
Increaso In public buying. The arrange,
ment makes the amount of the brokers'
commissions on a stock of $60 a share
par valuo tho same as thoso on Blocks of
$103 par, nnd has been well received In
this city by houses which execute orders
on tho New York Exchange.
The commission has been raised from
S cents to 1234 cents on stocks quoted
In Wall street on tho 100 per cent, basis,
thus enabling local brokers to receive
tho samo commission as If tho trans

To Illustrate the growth of tho odd-lot
business of late, ono large commission
house reported this weok having pur
chased $200,000 of small blocks of stock
for cash, all of rhlcn had been with
drawn from tho market.
Tho local list today ruled strong, with
good demand for Cambria Steel, , United
States Steel nnd Pennsylvania Steel pre
ferred at slight advances. Pennsylvania
Steel common again sold at 90.
Steel common again sold at 90. In tho

Since tho Increase In the American Oas
dividend tho stock had not sold until
today, when an odd lot camo out at 114,

a substantial gain over tho preceding

up.
Tho strongest Issue on tho list during
tho morning was J. O. Brill, which
opened up nearly 3 points nnd then re
acted. No particular new developments
wcro forthcoming, but tho Street was full
nf tnllr nt rlenla nnd thn nrnbnbllltv of
governmental Interference. Tho hopo was
expressed that tno supreme court wouiu
act quickly upon tho United States Steel
caso In order to settle tho matter onco
and for all. In regard to the Mldvnlo
deal It Is said that of tho authorized
capital of $100,000,000, between $70,000,000
nnd $75,009,000 will Issue immediately. It
has been prlvntely oversubscribed at n

100 per cent. It will represent cash and
cost values and there will bo only ono

It was asserted In well-informed quar
