LIEUTENANT LYNCH DIES
Detective Succumbs to Injuries Re
ceived in Performance of His Duty
Two Weeks Ago
Lieutenant of Detectives John Lynch
died last night In St. Mary's Hospital as
the remit of a fractured skull. Incurred
two weeks bro, when ho slipped and felt
while chaslne nn automobile.
The lieutenant, whose home was at 2018
Venango street, was passing Broad and
Clearfield streets with Detective Mul
hollsnd when thoy saw a youns woman
thrown from an automobile. The chauf
feur of the car then started to speed
away. Lynch and Mulholland pursuing.
After running about a block Lynch
slipped and fell heavily, striking on his
head.
Captain of Detectives Robert D. Cam
eron wept when he attempted to tell the
detectives of Lieutenant Lynch's death
at the roll-call today. "I can't fully ex
press myself, boys," he sold, "for no
words can bring him back, but we've all
lost a good friend and the public has
lost a faithful servant."
Ex-Director Porter later called up Cap
tain Cameron on the telephone and asked
to be Informed of the funeral arrange
ments so that he might attend the fu
neral. Mr. Porter praised Lynch In the
highest terms and said that he had rein
stated him when he was dismissed from
the force several years ago, because he
believed the dismissal was for political
purposes, and the services and knowledge
of Lynch were too valuable for the city
to lose.
The lieutenant showed improvement
after spending a few days at the Samar
itan Hospital. He Insisted on going to
his home, despite the advice of physi
cians. Several days later his condition
became so serious that he was hurried
to St. Mary's Hospital, where physicians
found It Impossible to save his life.
The widow and two daughters. It and 11
years old, survive.
Lieutenant Lynch was born In Phila
delphia January 5, 1873. He was appointed
patrolman February 2$. 1894. His work In
that department soon brought him promo
tion to the Detective Bureau. Under the
administration of Captain of Detectives
Cameron he became a lieutenant and he
was looked upon as the "right-hand man"
or the captain at City Hall.
One of the most notablo exploits of the
lieutenant was his capture of Arthur
Hutton, wanted, for a $13,000 embezzlement.
In 1809. The arrest was made In the West.
In 1)13 the lieutenant played an Important
part In breaking up the gang of New
York gunmen said to have been Imported
to this city to make trouble in the gar
ment workers' strike.

Pastor of Memorial Methodist Church
Dies in Son's Home
The death of the llev. Charles W. Blck
ley, pastor of the Memorial Methodist
Episcopal Church, 8th and Cumberland
streets, occurred last night at the home
of his son, Dr. O. U. Blckley, 1429 South
Broad street. For 60 years Doctor Blck
ley had been a member of the Philadel
phia Conference of the Methodist Epis
copal Church.
Doctor Blckley was descended from a
family of clergymen and waa responsible
for bringing four of his nephews Into the
ministry. They are Oeorge H. Blckley,
O. Blckley Burns, V. E. Rorer and
Charles Wesley Burns, nil of whom oc
cupy pulpits In Philadelphia.
Doctor Blckley was recognized as a
powerful speaker and was Identified with
many Important undertakings in this city.
He was educated In Dickinson College and
began his service In the ministry when
only 19 years old. He Is survived by a
widow, two sons Dr. Georgo H. Blokley,
of the Hahnemann Hospital, and Dr.
Lloyd D. Blckley and a daughter, Mrs.
George S. Baton, of Pittsburgh. Mrs.
Blckley is president of the Women's
Home Missionary Society of the confer

Veteran of Civil War and Former
Commander of Revenue Cutters
Captain Owen B. Wilier, of Washington,
who retired several years ago from the
"United States Revenue Cutter Service,
died at his home lata yesterday, accord
In, to Information received today by his
friends In this city.
Captain Wllley, who waa TI years old,
formerly commanded the revenue cutters
Washington and Algonquin, which were
stationed at this port. Several of his
nieces and nephews reside In this city.
Captain Wllley entered the navy at the
age of It, and when the Civil War broke
out enlisted with a Washington regiment
and was rapidly promoted until he
reached the rank of major.
When the revenue cutter service was
reorganized following the war, he was
commissioned a lieutenant In the service
and 'later promoted to captain. II0 is
swvtved by his widow, a brother and
twe sisters.
