tH the early dealings today. United States Steel common was the leader, first
mim being recorded as 12.000 shares on the way up and on buying of largo
Mocks the price went across 81 In the next few minutes, the highest mark
touched since 1912.
There was a wide opening In Inspiration Copper, 4000 shares selling at a
rw high mark for the stock. Other copper stocks were in heavy demand,
Including Anaconda, Hay Consolidated, Utah and Guggenheim Exploration.
American Smelting rose a point. The specialties and minor steel Industrials as
a group were also In good demand at upturns ranging from 1 to 2 points. Good
rich Rubber rose to a new high record, whllo New York Central responded to
the favorable statement for August with a gain of a point. Pennsylvania also
Improved. Union Pacific fluctuated erratically.
There was heavy realizing on tho Initial rise and this produced Irregularity.
The recent leaders such as Baldwin Locomotive, Colorado Fuel, Crucible Steel
and Great Northern Ore were relatively Inactive. New leaders camo to the foro
including Cotton OH and the fertilizer issue.

successive "million share" days in the stock market, may result in a reckless

would call for larger collateral If the market does not act more conservatively.

were said today to total over J400.000.000. Total sales of stocks for tho first
two hours were 766,000 Bhores, far. exceeding records set earlier In tho week.
Bales of Steel alone aggregated 180,000 shares, whllo Westtnghouso on Us ad
vance showed a total of 82,000 before noon.
Big traders in Westlnghouso watched that stock Jump to new high levels
In mldafternoon and thoso who sold earlier In tho day believing it hod reached
Its turning point made frantic attempts to buy back tho stock. Westtnghouso's
strength was due to reports of a new wnr order received by that company.
Steel continued the leader of the market, though equipment shares were strong
and active, American Can making a new high record. Slight reactions occurred
Just before the close. Baldwin broke about 6 points.
An Interview which Judge Gary, Chairman of tho Steel Board, gave out
inspired many of the purchases of steel common today and mado that stock
the feature of the market. The market for steel was also greatly strengthened
by buying orders from a big house with Chicago connections. Tho buying by
and through this houso was not only strong; it was conspicuous. It even ap
peared to be designed to be conspicuous and impress tho trading public with
the idea that the big interests in the United States Steel Corporation wanted
to see the market go up.
Wall streot Is beginning to "crack under the strain" of the almost un
precedented trading of tho past week. Several commission houses suggested
that, a vacation be tnken tomorrow, to permit overworked clerks to catch up
With the clerical work resulting from the "million share days." Two clerks
wero reported overcome today from the strain. A governor of the stock ex
change said, however, that it would bo almost impossible to closo tomorrow
as the whole world is trading in this market and'people outside of New York
cannot bo deprived of an opportunity to buy and sell because local brokers are
overwhelmed with the rush of business. Henry Clews, a veteran of the street
declared that the market was booming because people all over tho country
want tc buy stocks and the big interests are in an optimistic mood because
they are confident the new Federal Reserve banking law will protect the country
from any panics.

CHICAGO, Oct. 1. September's passing
failed to clarify in the slightest the com
plicated situation that has confronted
grain traders for many months, and the
market opened today with operators ap
prehensively nervous. Prices ranged
generally under those of yesterday's clos
ing quotations and lacked support.
Trading was light, although sellers were
anxious to unload, because of the weak
ness of outside markets. Winnipeg
broke Hi finder the final quotation of
yesterday. Interior movements continue
heavy, with small accumulation, old con
tracts being rapidly filled. The market
became firmer In the late dealings and
closed steady.
In going out at L15Vi September was
the highest It has been since June and
shorts had difficulty In covering. A simi
lar situation is predicted for December,
although it Is expected cash and Decem
ber will get closer In a short time. Bulls
advise buying on the breaks, with bears
dissenting. , Snow's estimate of the total
United States crop had a steadying effect
for a while. Wheat is estimated at 998,
Mp.eQO bushels: corn 3.018.000.000 bushels,
and oats at 1,607,800.000 bushels.
Corn and oats, like wheat, showed an
arly decline, with a prospect that it
will not continue unless something un
foreseen happens.

NEW YORK. Oct. 1. Business wa restricted
on the cotton exchange at the opening this
morning, there being apparently a disposition
on the part of the traders to wait for definite
newa from the south on the storm. The under
tone waa irregular, October advancing 18 polnta
on the call, while the other options were one
point lower to three points higher. There wai
somo profit taking after the call, but the buy.
In waa sufficient to sustain the market.
Prices broke aharply later on rumora of a
wide open drop In the New Orleans market.
It waa said the exchange then had been rloxed.
Decline ranged from 40 to S2 points, but
feerlh rallies followed and much of tha loss
has made up at the close.

ripple In the money market.
The unwonted stability Is attributed In
part to the henvy accumulation of gold
In this country as a result of the record
breaking exports to Europe, and also to
the operation of tho new Federal Re
serve Dank system. Today broker wpre
being offered all the funds they wanted
on call at 314 per cent., nnd In somo
cases even lower figures were quoted.
Time money was Just a shade firmer
than of late, but tho chango was scarcely
percentlblo.
The August report of the Pennsylvania
system went far to bear out the state
ment mado In this column yesterday,
that local corporations wero feollng the
return of prosperity. The total receipts
for the month were $31,769,896, an Increase

TRADE CONDITIONS
SHOW IMPROVEMENT
In the local cotton trade condition are
reported aa being more satisfactory than
for some time past, according to It, q.
Dun A Co. Dealers in cotton yarns re
port they have more orders on hand than
for some time past, although the local
business Is somewhat dull, orders being
principally from out of town. In some
cases dealers report they have good or
ders from South' American firms. Local
knitters and weavers report that, while
they have orders on hand, they have
oeen unable to obtain the work from
their dyers owing to lack of dyestufts.
Collections are good In most quarters
and n good feeling appears to prevail
among the trade generally. The wool
market Is still quiet and there appears
to have been no material change during
tho past week. The market appears to
be less' than a week ago. and holders
appear to show a disposition to make
some concessions In order to make sales.
Tho mills are well supplied with raw
material nnd do not ppar to be dis
posed to buy ahead. Business in terri
tory wools has been quiet
