WHEAT WEAKENED;

Report Current That Canada
WouH Remove American
Duty
CHICAGO, Sept. 27. September wheat
waa again the feature upon the opening
of the grain market today. It opened 3i
cents under Saturday's closing quotation,
and then .made up 251 cents of the loss
In the early hours. Offerings wero ex
ceedingly light and small sales easily
swayed the price. Cash wheat drawing
closer to September has given the latter
strength. Other features broke about
eren with Saturday's closing prices, but
possessed a wavering undertone.
September fell to $1.03 at the close, with
other months also soft
The report that Canada was to remove
the duty from American wheat, to take
"vantag0 ,of the reciprocity treaty and
get Canadian wheat Into this country free
of duty, and: the varying reports of the
Progress of the loan to the Allies, kept
JJP a constant nervous tension among
traders.
Farms are stubbornly holding back
Momenta with the expectation of getting

RUMORS OP NEWLY MADE FORTtf
FILL THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT;

. - -at
Trie local financial district Is full ot
talk of newly made fortunes these days.
Men nro pointed out who received tips
J b! -- I'ont shares. Cambria Bteel,
Dethlehem. Haldwln Locomotive snd
others, nnd who successfully pyramided
the proverbial shoestring Into n substan
tial Income for life. One well-known
Philadelphia Is said to have cleared
more than n million In Baldwin alone,
nnd nnother J500.000 In du Pont. Predic
tions of still Krcater coups to come are
heard on every side, and many are al
ready showlnu signs of maklnir jrood,
The boom In so-cnllcd "war shares" Is
npproachlnR the scale of the days of the
formation of the United States Bteel Cor
poration, when n score of multimillion
aires were mndo virtually over nlftht. To
lay the Street Is agog with the expecta
tion of huge capital Issues brought Into ex.
Istance through the formation of another
big steel combine. Meantime, the arrest
war-material companies arc steadily seek
ing; new channels for the Investment of
their enormously expanded surplus funds.
Extensions of plants are only taking- up
a portion of these, and the managements
of the various prosperous concerns are
naturally turning to the security markets.
Hence, there ls n double process aiding
the market's upward swing. Gold Infla
tion, too, la doing Its share toward boom
ing security values In face of the heaviest
foreign liquidation In years. One banker
today estimated Jhat this selling has
amounted to not leas than J700.000.000 from
England alone, and that the total Is
over a billion, but the bulk of this sell
ing has been taken care of prlvataly, K 1
nsseneci.
The remarkable feature of that
movement Is the manner In which
securities have been absorbed. Of Itat
observers say. there has been s. dl
let-up In the liquidating nroceM. and
has been reflected In the renewal of
upswing In stocks.
On 'Change here today during- the
hour alone over 21.000 ahnrea of Cambr
Steel changed hands, nnd the rise wa
extended to 76", with scarcely a chl
tnis compared with 67, last week's rlu
lng Quotation nnd brounht the nrlca
the stock to the figure predicted, quit
generally ror it lasi weeK. By Men tl
supply of stock had Increased sufficient!;
to cause a reaction of about half tri
morlnlng's gain, and thereafter the quota
tion fell back further. Nearly aV)
shares of Cambria changed hands tote
which constitutes a record. The cr
was also very active.
Baldwin Locomotive followed the wltl
Jump In wall street, and lt was 'tag
for granted that the refusal of the
Ponts to either confirm or deny secuiii
control was tantamount to admission tha
they had. Other stocks, In which posslij
deals have been rumored, were relatlTel
quiet, including Brill and Cramp. 8to
Battery moved up, aa did Pennsylvania
united states steel and Philadelphia. Ele
trie. Later on, however. Cramp roe
point and Brill scored a gain of ft.
active was the trading that the Clearin
House announced lt would remain
for certification of sheets until S p.
until further notice.
