From the first hole to tho last, tho con
test was most thrilling, and desplto the
fact that Mrs. Vandcrbeck always held
the lead, Mrs. Barlow kept right after
her and very nearly pulled the match
out of the fire
By winning, Mrs. Vandcrbeck obtained
revenge for the defeats that sho has suf
fered at the hands of her opponent In
past matches.
Mrs. Barlow overdrove tho green on
the fifth to the rough, and Mrs. Vnn
derbeck was on with her drive, but
missed a 3-foot putt for a win In three,
Mrs. Barlow drove Into tho bunker on
the sixth und pulled across the course
with her second, and she was on the
green Inthreo to two and lost tho hole
four to Ave.
On tho seventh Mrs. Vnnderbeck ran
down a long putt for a live, but on the
eighth Mrs Barlow went her ono bet
ter. Both were on the green In four,
but Mrs. Barlow was 40 feet from the
pin. To tho surprise of the gallery, she
holed out and won tho hole when Mrs.
Vandcrbeck took two putts. The ninth
hole was halved tn fives, and Mrs. Vnn
derbeck was two up at the turn.
In the second semifinal match Mrs.
Caleb F. Fox easily defeated Miss
Eleanor T. Chandler E up and 4 to play.
Miss Chandler's putting was exceedingly
weak, and this accounted largely for her

Cunningham, wearlnj the colors of the
Longwood Cricket Club, Boston, won two
matches, semifinal and flnnl, In the sin
gles section of the women's Philadelphia
and district lawn tennis championship, at
the Oermantown Cricket Club, Mnnhelm,
today, and earned the privilege of con
testing tha challenge round tomorrow
against tho tltlcholder. Miss Marlon Cres-

The Boston girl's semifinal victory was
over Miss E. O. Osthclmer, Huntingdon
Valley, at 6-1. 6-4. In the final round Mrs.p
Forrest Kerbaugh, Bclfleld Country Club,'
who Is barely a head taller than tho
height of the not, took tho first set that
Miss Cunningham has lost since the start
of the tournament. The scores were 6-1,
3-8, 6-0.
The final round was originally sched
uled to start at 2 p. m., but was begun
an hcur earlier. In order to give Miss
Cunningham a chance to rest up before
the start of tho doubles and mixed
doubles, since she Is In the semifinal of
both of these events. Hence, the gallery
was imall, but what It lacked tn num
bers It made up In enthusiasm.
At the outset It looked like a walk
over for tho Bostonlon. She began tho
service and won. broke through Mrs.
Kerbaugh for the second game and re
peated the performance until she led at
4 love. She eased up In the. fifth game,
but took the sixth and seventh for the
set at 6-1. Miss Cunningham had a grand
total of 26 points, of which 10 were
earned, eight from placement and two
service aces. All but two of Mrs. Ker
baugh's 15 points were from her op
ponent's nets and outs.
The tiny Belfleld player staged n
brilliant rally In the second set, and from
her base line kept Miss Cunningham
chasing from one sldo of the court to the
other. Her well-planned offensive tactics
forced Miss Cunningham to pllo up a
total of 29 nets and outs. Mrs. Kerbaugh
had 24 nets and outs and each had six
placement aces, while Miss Cunningham
served one double fault, making the point
total 38 to 30 and the games 6 and 3.
Tho soven-mlnuto rest between tho
second and final sets really decided the
Issue, for Miss Cunningham came back
greatly refreshed, while her opponent, re
laxlng, was unable to keep up her well
sustained effort. With the conditions of
the second exactly reversed. Miss Cun
ningham ran six straight games, for a
total of 28 points, against 7 points for
Mrs. Kerbaugh.
The semifinal In ladles' doubles was be
tween Mlas Cunningham and Mrs. F. M
Felton and Miss Emily Kennedy and Miss
Edith Heath. In the other half of the
draw Mrs. W, P. Newhall and Miss E.
O. Osthelmer reached the final yester
day. In mixed doubles the matches were
