George D. Porter, Independent may

Director of the Department of Public
Safety to Mayor Blankenburg shortly
after noon today In order to assume Im
mediate leadership of the fight against
the election of Thomas B. Smith, the Or

resignation does not go into effect un
til 6 o'clock this afternoon, in order to
allow the Director to sign several' im
portant contracts.
Director Porter's resignation follows:
To the Hon. Rudolph Blankenburg,
Mayor of Philadelphia:
Dear Slr-After nearly four years of
personal and official relations with you.
It la extremely difficult and painful for
me to ask you to permit me to sever the
ofllclal relations. In doing ,ao vaIlow me
to express my strong sense of apprecia
tion for the complete confidence which
you have always manifested in my con
duct as head of the Important department
which you placed In my charge In De
cember, 1911, and for the delightful char
acter of our personal association.
As you are aware, however, at the
primary election yesterday the call was
extended to me to stand as the repre
sentative of good government in the
coming mayoralty election. This la a
call which I cannot refuse, and as it
would be manifestly Improper that a can
didate for the office of mayor should oc
cupy the position of Director of the De
partment of Public Safety, I am con
strained to ask your acceptance of my
resignation, to take effect at the close of
business today, I am.
Very respectfully yours,
George D. Porter,
