PECT OPIUM ON SHIP
Officials Will Search Vessel for Chi
nese and Drugs
Customs and immigration officials went
to needy Island today to search the
schooner Pendleton Slaters, bound to
Chester from Jamaica, on which, it Is
rumored, are several Chinese and quan
tities of opium. The vessel has a cargo
of logwood from Port Morant, Jamaica,
for the American Dyewood Company at
Chester, and la under command of Cap
tain Jeremiah Hayes.,
Dispatches from Jamaica to the Gov
ernment officials here said that about U
Chinese and quantities of opium were
on the vessel to be smuggled Into this
country. Immigration Inspector Phillips
and Customs Inspector Agnew boarded
the vessel last night whe.n she entered
the Capes. Maritime men here do not
believe that Captain Hayes would sanc
tion smuggling of any kind. They de
clare ho is one of the best liked and
most efficient mariners In the Jamaica
