FATHER PLEADS FOR SON
Says Boy Held in Media Jail Is of
Unsound Mind
After hearing a father's plea for an
Insane son In tho Media Jail. President
Judge Isaac H Johnson, of the Delaware
County Court, has promised to withhold
sentence until the youth's mental condi
tion can be determined by competent
physicians. The name of the prisoner Is
William J. Smith, son of a traveling
.salesman of the same name, of Newark,
N, J and according to his relatives he
has already been In four Institutions for
the Insane.
He has been In the Media Jail since
May, when bo was charged with having
robbed tho homo of a family named ltlch
nrdson of several thousand, dollars' worth
of diamonds. He pleaded guilty In June
and has boen awaiting sentence ever
since. It Is admitted thnt tho Irrespon
sible lad has been kept In solitary con
finement and that on one occasion he
was thrown Into a dungeon for 48 hours.
The plea of tho lad's father was con
tained In a letter sent to the Tubllc Led
ger, which was forwarded to Judge John
son. The Jurist promptly agreed to with
hold sentence until n sanitary commis
sion has tltno to act.
