Suffrage Leader Will Campaign in
Southern Part of State
Woman Suffrage will be kept constantly
before the voters of New Jersey this week
by numerous demonstrations at which Dr.
Anna Howard Shaw, president of the Na
tional Woman's Suffrage Association,
will be the chief speaker She will enter
the state tomorrow and will tour Salem,
Gloucester and Camden Counties.
The Woodstown Equal Suffrage League
the oldest In the state, will hold a suf
frage automobile parade Tuesday after
noon through Salem County, with the co
operation of other suffrage organisations.
A county organisation will be formed.
Doctor Shaw will speak In. the courthouse
at Salem. t
Gloucester County Suffragists also will
hold a parade at Woodbury, where their
leader 1 scheduled to appear next Wed
nesday night. Doctor Shaw will speak

hlckon. The annual meet of the Atlantlo
division of the American Canoe Associa
tion has been going on, nnd the Phila
delphia Canoe Club made elaborate prep
arations for tho celebration. There have
been representatives from Maryland,
Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey
encamped on the Wissahickon adjoining
Colony Castle, tho club house of tho
Philadelphia Club. Dr. David J. Boon Is
commodore of the entertaining club; Mr.
Howard R. Lord, vlco commodore', Mr.
Joseph W. Blair, eecretary; Mr. Eugene
II. Hunter, treasurers Mr. Earlo F. Ker
bcr, quartermaster, nnd Mr. Alfred H
Kress, fleet captain. The board of direc
tors Includes the officers and Messrs. Ar
thur F. Ehrllngcr, Frederick J. Ehrlln
gcr, Otto R. Stoeckle, Howard V. Fell
and Georgo F. Elsenhardt.
Tradition states that at the time of the
Revolutionary War, Colony Castle, orig
inally a mill, was owned by the Smith
family, who lived In what is now known
ns Riverside Mansion. During the tem
porary absence of the Smiths tho Doane
brothers, celebrated outlaws, who stole
from tho rich and gave to the poor, used
the mill for headquarters of their law
less band. Later it beenmo a nnll mill.
Tho water for running tho mill came
from a race, after having previously
turned tho wheel of a sawmill that
fronted on Rldgo avenue. From the nail
mill tho water was carried en Its way
to tho creek. The castle after being un
occupied for years was fitted up as the
uprlver home of "The State In Schuyl
kill," a society devoted to fishing, of
which tho late John Wagner (whose
uncle, Professor Wagner, founded the
Wagner institute, nt nin siren aim
Montgomery avenue), was president.
Tho building, which is included In Fair
mount Park, in tlmo became the home of
tho Philadelphia Canoe Club, which has
added a number of Improvements, and
tho old structure, with its roomy parlor
nnd large, plcturesquo fireplace. Is often
used for dances nnd other social gather
ings, whllo the shaded veranda affords a
pleasant and cool place for tho friends
nnd relatives of the members to view
tho river nnd watch tho races.
