brought to the Forrest Is to change
Broadway to Broad street. Outside auoh
a summary this huge entertainment of
a hundred satisfactions leaves him won
dering what on earth to eay first. It has
too many virtues.
Thero Is the scenario, first of alt.
With Frank Woods' aid Mr. arlflUh ha
begun-fcy tho miracle of making Thomas
Dixon plausible. More than that, he has
bultt on the foundation of the rhetorical
"Clansman" and some Northern and
Southern love affairs which are just about
aa pucrllo a .three-hour narrative that
moves with admirable sequence to excit
ing and nffecVng climaxes. Finally, ho'
has fused the drama of nations with tho
drama ot Individuals, lie has thrown
Rreat vlatas of tho Civil War before us
as a background to tho adventures of his
people and mado the two unite to aid
euch other.
The one .thing that Impresses most Is
undoubtedly the mighty perfection of tho
battle scenes. The sweep and tho detail,
the Immensity of tho action and perfec
tion ot each part, make you marvel at
the Imagination nnd the labor that must
havo been behind their conception and
rehearsal. Yet jOrlfllth's skill In tho de
velopment of tho war scenes as a whole
Is far mare remarkable. By progressing
from rushing guerrilla skirmishes at
Piedmont to tho devastating descent of
Sherman on Atlanta, nnd flnnlty to the
rebel charges and defeat on the cannon
swept plains of Petersburg, Orimth
sweeps his audience to a climax ot battle
that Is terrific
Whllo the first part of the picture Is
war In the targe, Impressive and moving
In the grander sense, the second ts made
melodramatic and exciting by the rides
ot the KuKlux Klan to save various
whites from tht- perils of Reconstruction.
There Orllllth uses every ounce of the
screen's power to fling out rapid, racing
action. And to this melodrama he adds
some beautiful, striking views of tho
white riders assembling ln broad fields,
charging down long, still roads, curving
over hills nt sunrise. These nro only a
few examples of tho admlrnbto wedding
of, excitement nnd beauty which Grlinth
so sagely recognizes na tho photoplay's
special province.
There nro n dozen other perfections. To
name only ono example ot one of these,
tho photography picks out the difference
of atmospheric light between a northern
town nnd the leaf-flecked warmness of
South Carolina. Music and some skilful
off-stage sounds add a thrill, sometimes
of recollection, sometimes of reality. Tho
acting is almost without exception of the
best film quality. It reaches Its height ln
Henry B. Walthall's spirited "Llttlo
Colonel." He ts an actor of rare Imagina
tive sense.
Judged by Qrlfllth's own very exacting
standards, there are only two mistakes
In "The Birth of n Nation." One is tho
tendency of tho sky to turn pink when
ever the Ku Klux Klan heave In sight
with their llttlo fiery cross. Tho other Is
Lillian Glsh.
But they aro small, Indeed, beside the
virtues hinted above. They are absolute
ly nothing by comparison with some
power of unified achievement ln Griffith's
work which bailies concrete statement.

WHEN Galveston was at the mercy of another great tropical
gale, when ships were being blown ashore and all communi
cation with the mainland was cut off, the question every
where was: Will the concrete sea-wall, erected to insure Galveston
from destruction, stand the brunt of the storm as it did in 1909?
Newspaper headlines and dispatches tell the story. Once more
the great wall, in which were used 28,500 barrels of
ALPHA
stood the lashing and the battering of the galeand is credited with
having saved Galveston.
ALPHA CEMENT has been used in a large number of con
structions where concrete had to meet unusual conditions and cement
of the highest grade wasrequired. ALPHA CEMENT represents
24 years of experience in cement-making and is tested by expert
chemists every hour, day and night, during its manufacture. Every
bag of ALPHA you buy is sure to be as good as that used in build
ing the Galveston Sea Wall. The six great ALPPIA plants have a
daily capacity of twenty-five thousand barrels.
Ask the ALPHA Dealer in your community or write us for the
valuable free illustrated handbook, "ALPHA CEMENT How to
Use It." It tells and shows how to make scores of improvements.

In this farce by A. Seymour iirown ana

Theatrical meteorologists, who have as

Their expectation was not unrewarded
The Inevitable occurred. The result was
to reduco shnrp analysis of "Brother
Masons" and to accept Its good points
nt perhaps a higher entertainment value
than they deserved. It had more than a
modicum of theso good points, and it
"went" swiftly and smoothly, thanks to
practice on tho Honrdwnlk crowds. He
cording the verdict of the large audience,
"Brother Masons" Is an early season
success, for Its situations and lines set
laugh waves Into continual vibration and
relcgnted thoughts or thermometer and

Why be critical? Why be captious?
Why nay tho situations merely dust off
tho familiar expedients of farce? Why
declare that tho humor of the dialogue
docs not proceed essentially from char

The audience has spoken. Rather, It h
laughed and applauded, Despite Its ver
dict, "only an observer" In the play,
houses for a decade may casually state
that some time his watchful waiting will
bo rewarded In a farce that has an un
hackneyed basts and situations that are
amusing, surprising and believable.
"Urother Masons" has two such episodes,
the smashing climax of act I and the
pinochle game In act lit.
Pome day, too, a playwright wilt reserve
his best, his most unexpected material
for the denouement of his farce. The
to-authors of "Urother Masons" have not
cone so, and the "reviser" frankly
riamed on the program has not reorgan
ized and reordered the situations,
Doubtless the collaborators thought the
result of their labors waa .funny enough.
Well, It has lots of laughs.
It Is dlfTicult to discover from the farce
whethor It was "built up" on a "catchy"
title, or whether the title was an nfter
thought, and the Maaonlo touches inter
polated to carry It.
At any rate, Miss Eburne has the
drollest role of her career as a specialist

personality, "gets" a plentttude of laughs
