For a pro-holiday Saturday market
trading was quito brisk in tho local cx
chango and Inclyded a number of stocks
which lmvo been dormant for some time,
such as ICeystono Telephone, Philadelphia
Electric and Tehlgh Navigation. Electric
storage Uattcry, however, continued to
bo the chief centre of attraction, with
Cambria Steel a close second.
StoraKO Uattcry accomplished Its cus
tomary trick of late, opening up very
strong and then slipping back, only to
rally attain at the close. The Initial
rise this morning of nearly two points
was quickly followed by heavy sellliiR,
nnd the price reacted below Friday's
close. Here fresh support appeared and
the stock closed up nearly $2. Cambria
Steel fluctuated moro narrowly, but ap
peared to meet considerable stock each
tlmo tho prlco approached close to 60.
It will be recalled that this Is tho figure
at which tho Frlck-Donner Interests are
supposed to hold an option on the Penn
sylvania majority holdings. The stock
is also said to be In process of grooming
for its debut on the New York Stock Ex
change. It is also quite possible that the
riccnt rlso haB been engineered for tho
purposo of establishing a substantial pre
mium abovo par, so as to give the man
agement an opportunity to issuo the
$3,000,000 stock remaining In the trensury.
Kcj stone Telephone advanced a point,
and the preferred also hardened. Hunt
ingdon and Broad Top rose $2 to 7, while
Lehigh Navigation appeared to be
scarce and light demand was sulllclcnt
to lift it a substantial fraction. On the
other hand, Pennsylvania Steel preferred,
despite much optimistic talk on the fu
ture of fho company, was Inclined to sag.
United States Steel remained quiescent.
The vcek ends with the steel 'mills
finding themselves under the greatest
pressure of the year, and. In fact, of sev
eral years. Fancy prices are being paid
for unfinished steel, such as above $26
Pittsburgh and above $30 Philadelphia, de
livery for rolling'' billets and $10 and
higher for forging billets.
Quiet but persistent Investment pur
chases of Pennsylvania Railroad shares
moved the prlco above C5 today. The pur
pose's to which the proceeds of the Penn
sylvania Railroad $49,000,000 4M per cent,
consolidated mortgage bonds of 10CO re
cently listed In New York nre to be ap
plied are as follows; Amounts due on
property at tbo northwest corner of 17th
and Filbert streets, $440,000; equipment
trust obligations maturing during 1915,
$5,007,000; six months' note, dated Novem
ber 1L 1911, held by Kulin, Locb & Co,
$5,000,000; water trust certificates $1,000,000.
equipment $7,500,000, construction and real
estate $1,706,000, total, $13,206,225.
Financial Briefs
On Friday the New York banks gained
$770,000 through 8ubtreasury operations.
The gross earnings of 36 railroads for
the third week of August wero $U,220,54,
decrease $567,539.
Sidney W. Keith has returned from a
trip to the Pacific coast.
Commercial failures this week In the
United States were 39, against 321 last
week and 301 last year. Of failures this
week 12s were in the Bast. 84 South, 82
West and 37 in tho Pacific States, and 115
reported liabilities of $5000 or more,
against 1S7 last week.
According to Bradstreet's growth in
trade and in leading Industries ia of a
cumulative character. Misgivings as to
the futuro seem to have practically dis
appeared, and though there aro some un
settling factors, such as the very weak
condition of foreign exchange and the
fickleness of labor, tho general tendency
Is onward and upward.
Tho New York Cotton and Coffee ex
changes were closed today.
Of $17,053,000 extended notes of Boston
and Maine Railroad, which matured Sep
tember 2, holders of alt except $400,000
have now agreed to postpone any rash
payment until March 2 next. Of non
assented portion, over $150,000 are British
holdings affected by overseas demand for
funds.
The International Nickel Company has
made application to list the following se
curities on the New York Stock Ex
change; $3,319,400 6 per cent, noncumu
latlve preferred, $$,382,300 common, $5,
593.200 voting trust certificates for pre
ferred, and $31,649,200 voting trust certifi
cates for common stock.
The Electric Storage Battery Company
Is said to have closed additional con
tracts for lighting outfits for the war
launches ordered by England from the
Submarine Boat Corporation.
Plscusslng tha market outlook, Chand
ler Bros. & Co. say: "Some rather shrwd
observers Incline to the view that Sep
tember will show a somewhat more two
sided market with prices showing easier
Inclination to recede. Our own views are
that If such recessions do occur, it will
afford rare opportunity to those prepared
to purchase, to make wonderful profits
very soon thereafter."
NOTES OP THE RAIL

beds, woven-wlra mattresses and similar
articles wera suspended until January 6th

LONDON STOCK MARKET
Bankers Co-operating to Bring Nor
mal Exchange Rates
LONDON Sept. 4. Leading bankers are
co-operating to bring about normal con
dltons In exchange as quickly as possi
ble. They have been actuated in ther
efforts by a desire to prevent further
indiscriminate soiling of American secu
rities, which diminishes the power of
bankers In the United States to lend to
London.
Business In securities on the Stock Ex
change was on a light scale and the at
tendance was small. The markets had a
mixed appearance. Further support was
furnished to the war lpans and trading
In them was brisk.
Dealings in Americans were negligible,
following continued strength In the ex
change, but the group was much steadier.
Canadian Pacific was dull, having been
affected by the failure of the road to
show an Increase In earnings. The In
ternational Mercantile Marine shares and
Hudson Bay Company Issues again advanced-Argentine
rails were Irregular- Plce
changes In Home rails Were narrow, but
the sentiment was cheerful, There was
disbursed In dividends today 600,000. The
tone pf mines and oils was harder.
