NEW HIGH RECORD
FOR CAMBRIA STEEL
Electric Storngc Battery Jump
ed Four Points nt the Open
ing; Heavy Sales
It wa another day of wide fluctuation
nnd heavy trmllne on tho local exchange.
Cnmbrlr. Steel und Klectrlc Storngo Unt
tory made new tops for tho present move
ment, whllo tho Asphalt Indues, LehlKh
Navigation and others ndvnnccd sharply.
Approximately 10,000 shares of Cambria
changed hands today nnd about 12,400
Klectrlc Storngo Battery.
Klectrlc Storage llattery opened Just 4
points above last night's close, exactly
1035 shnrcs changing hands at 78. The
next salo wni 1800 shares nt 77 nnd
tho prlc) thon fe'.l to 75. Thereafter tho
market became steadier and later rallied
to the opening figure. Flat denial 'was
mado by brokers Kcncrnlly credited with
operating- for the Wltlcner estate that nny
of Its holdings had been sold. This may
have been a stimulating .Influence,
although tho New York trading element
was chleny responsible for the rise. Tho
ndvanco In Storngo us well ns that of
Cambria Steel were all the moro note
worthy because they came nt a time when
tho general market was Inclined to bo re
actionary. It was snld that General Electric Inter
ests wcro buyers of Storage. This Is
not tho first time that the big New
York Company has been reported Invest
ing In local Fecurltles. It Is generally
believed In the Street that the company.
01 Interests closely .connected with It,
hold a largo block of Philadelphia Klec
trlc shnrcs, so that It would not bo sur
prising If tho potential possibilities of
tho Klectrlc Storage Battery Company
had not nppcaled to tho nstuto Onnnclors
nt tho head of Gcncrnl Klectrlc Tho
early advance wns not fully held to tho
close, the final flguro being 7G?i. a gain
of 1.
Cumbria Steel was second only to Stor
ngo In point ot buoyancy, extending yes
terday's advance over 2 points further,
thereby establishing a new high record.
As ono explanation for tho rise, the
suggestion was mado that tho Frlck
Donnor option on :ho Pennsylvania
majority holdings expires October 1.
and that tho option is likely to bo ex
ercised. Tho right of purchase Is said to
be placed at $60 pet share. There was
nlso a story that tho stock might bo listed
on the Now York Exchange. Except for
a rise of over a point In Philadelphia Com-,
pnny cumulative preferred to 41, which
placed It on a parity with the common
stock, nnd a show of strength In the As
phalt Ifhucs, there were nothing but reln
tlvtly narrow fluctuations to record else
where until nround noon when there
came a three-point drop In Cramp Ship-'
uunaing snares, nut onermgs wero light.

GRAINS DEPRESSED;
SHORTS HAVE COVERED
Favorable Weather Reports
Sent Prices Downward ; Frost
Damage Exaggerated
CHICAGO, 8cpt. 3. A switch from tho
buying- to the selllnir side of tho urnln
market at the opening todny, upon fav
orable weather reports, wns responsible
for the disappearance of tho support
which nppeared late yesterday. Conse
quently prices were generally below the
closing quotations of yesterday and were
weak. It Is estimated that shorts se
cured millions of bushels on tho break
of the last few days. Their activities
yesterday caused tho temporary bulge.
Free scllliiK at the opening knocked
down tho price of September wheat sales
from 07 to !Rt,i beforo noon. Uuylng uf
December by some big operators did not
prevent It from sinking. It opened at
i'l, i cent less than yestcrday'a closing
nuotatlon, nnd sngged to 92'i In tho
eatly hours. May followed tho lend of
September nnd December and dropped
1H cents before noon, after opening nt
084. It closed yesterday nt 88H asked.
Armour's estimate that the corn crop
will amount to 3,000.000.000 bushels made
tho sentiment extremely bearish. Frost
(In mar; o reports have been exaggerated,
It Is claimed, Dears appear to be holding
off September. December slipped down
below 60. reaching 6S)i before noon. May
was weak and followed fast after De
cember. Selling nppeared In considerable volume
Into In tho day and prices fell still fur
ther, losses at tho closo ranging from
Wi cent to 2 cents.
Oats held fairly firm, when compared
with tho other grains.
Export sales were reported totaling 300.
000 bushels of wheat. Largo oat export
sales were said to liavo been made but
could not bo verified.
Liverpool cables showed tho market
to bo listless but firm. Spots and cargoes
were reported firm with light arrival and
unfavorable United Kingdom weather re
ports, Dry, cold weather, which appears to
have gripped Argentina. Is responsible
for a nervous market nt Uuenos Aires.
Shipments for tho week are given at
200,000 bushels of wheat, against 378,000
bushels last week nnd 274,000 bushels last
year. Corn exports for the same period
are 2.976,000 bushels this week, 4,200,000
bushels last week and 1,211,000 bushels last

VICTORY FOR STOCKHOLDERS
Supreme Court Allows Amendment in
New Haven Suit
BOSTON, Sept. 3.
Judge Do Coursey of the Supreme Court
today allowed the plaintiffs In tho suit ot
the minor stockholders of the New Haven'
and Boston and Maine railroads, wh.o
stfek to hold the directors of the road
from 1MB to 1909 responsible for losses of
$102,000,000 to amend their lelll as requested
This Is a big victory for tho minor
stockholders BUlt wns defective beca.ui
go on unless It strikes further leeal nnnn
The full bench recently held the minor
stocKiioiacrs suit was defective because
Insufficient time had been given to the
new directors to sue the old directors on
their account. The plaintiffs met this
objection by filing an amendment in
which It was stated that on July 21, the
new directors voted not to sue the old
directors for losses resulting from the
mismanagement of the railroad. The deJ
fendants hold It was not an amendment,
but a further supplementary bill and
should not bo allowed to stand.
