.A sharp advance In Klectrlc Storage
Mattery was a feature of nn otherwise
quiet session on the Philadelphia Stock
Exchange today. Opening at 6214, com
pared with a closing price last night of

about four points. Buying orders were
larger thnn have appealed In this Issue

rcarce. It was said that liquidation from
nn estate which hns been In progress for
uomo time had been completed. This,
taken together with the knowledge that
tho company is operating nlmost at
capacity with some very good orders In
sight, helped to boost the quotation.
Part of tho buying was for New York
account. About C300 shorcOs changed
hands during the session.

Transit were heavy spots each declining
more than a point, but offerings were
small.

At the directors' .meeting of tho Brook
lyn Union QaB Company, which will be
held next month, It Is believed In some
quarters that the question of Increasing
the capital stock will be considered. An
official of the company stated that he
was not aware that any action to this
end would be taken by the directors at
the forthcoming meeting, although he In
timated that developments along this line
might crop out at any time. If an In
crease In tho capital Is uuthortxed, share

to subscribe for the new stock pro rata
at par. Jn December, 1903, the author
ised stock was Increased from $.5,000,000

CHICAOO, Aug;. St. Despite tho stren
uous efforts of many large traders to
rally tho wheat market at the opening
today, prices continued to slide down,
ward. Opening prices were ft trifle aboVo
yesterday's closing, but the support was
weak and tho decline net In early. Now
low levels were reached. ?
Those who expected foreigners and
millers to bid tho market up When the
dollar mark was reached, wore doomed to
disappointment. Light Inquiry came from
both sources, fihorts having covered,
business today In the early hours was
far from brisk. Chief Interest Jipptared
to centre around December, which dis
played much activity but no strength,
Humors of frost damage ond wet weather'
reporta were offset by Increased arrivals
of spring.
September wheat sold at fttH at the
opening, the same price naked at the
closing yesterday. Its undertone was
unsteady nnd It declined to S8H before
noon. December opened at 8H, against
KT1 received nt yesterday's flnnl sules.
iluylng was scattered. Hay advanced
C overnight, bringing Jl.OIti at tho
final sates. It lost Its gain before noon.
Iluylng orders were put out late In the
day and prices recovered nil around frotc
the low of the day and closed nbovo the
final of yesterday.
Kxport Bnlcs reported totaled 320,t)O0
bushels, 10O.C0O for tho Dutch Govern
ment. Chicago cash .handlers so)d. 80,000
bushels ot wheat for seaboard delivery.
An order for 100,000 bushels, to be shipped
via, Montreal, was reported canceled. It
Is estimated that Canada will have nn
enormous surplus. British buyers will
keep out of the American markets', It Is
said, until this surplus has been cared
for.
While a steady undertone was evident
In Liverpool cables, the market was dull.
American weakness was offset by favor
able Wlnnepcg reports.
Argentine weather conditions are re
ported bad, a dry season seriously in
terfering with crops. Tho visible supply
for the week Is estimated at 400,000 bushels
of wheat, against 709,000 last week, and
none In the same period of last year.
Corn supplies totaled 3,825,000 bushels,
compared with 4,072,000 last week and
