In compnrl.on wllh recent day, trad

fined to tho ideel nhnres, and as usdnl,
united States steel was the most nrtlvfl,
but Cambria Steel wag the most active
of tho distinctly local Issues.
The demand for Cambria appeared t
be Kood. Much of the recent buying of
this slock has been for New Vork ac
count, and It Is understood that It wilt
soon bo listed on tho hlK board In New
ork. To this end. It is said that pr

also been bought to some extent by Noiv
lork Intcrqats. During: the early morn
Inc Cnmbrln gained 60 cents, but lost u
before midday.
Following the trend of tho New York
market prices became reactionary In tho
afternoon. Losses, however, were mostly
conllned to fractions, althounh In Ilald
wln there was n loss of 1V4 by ! o'clock.
More attention wna paid tu the bond di
vision in the afternoon, but tr.-nllna was
not active. Late In the day Electric
Storage became quite active and moved
up easily, gaining a good-sized fraction
for tho day. The mnjorlty ot tho local
list was orf. Thirteen shares of United
Companies of New Jersey, an Inactive
stock, changed hands at 220H, off 2?i from
tho Inst previous sale.
rhlladclphln Rapid Transit made no re
sponse to tho good earnings' statement
for July, the tlrst month of tho com
pany's now fiscal year, and which camu
out after tho close yesterday.
Tho stock did not oncn ui In tho morn
ing, but around midday j,hc trust certlil
cutes appeared on tho tape at unchntiKoJ
prices. Oross passenger earnings, while
they allowed a decrease of 11,3G0, were
very much better than In May, when thy
were J2SS.C01 smaller, no monthly icport
having been Issued in Juno, as the an
nual report come out at that time. By
cutting operating expenses f 12,000. the
company was able to show an increase ot

The fact that tho gross earnings were
only a little more thou $11,000 smaller
was favorably commented on, and man'
pointed out that the competition of tho
Jitneys apparently was not so great, anl
July of any mouth In the year was th
ouo In which the small cars should hac
made the largest Inroads Into tho .com
pany's earnings, with the parks open and
with summer trnftlc nt the highest point.

Tho financial editor ot the Morning

which Amerlra turned to this country for

No doubt he refers to the modern lllmn.
clol crlsl-j in the American Civil War.
Owln? to the blockade, such financial
support as was derived from here, went

Personally. I assume that If the prob

In n friendly way by diplomacy, New

Ono muy notice that tho French nnd
