LEADING LOCAL STOCKS
SCORED SHARP GAINS
Cramp, Brill, Baldwin, Storage
Battery arid the Steel Is-
sUeS BUoyaht
Following tho example of the New York
list, local Industrial lsau developed
iii.i neu mrcngin ni me resumption of
business on tho Philadelphia Exchange
this mbrnlng. Heavy buying orders ap
peared In United Stales Steel and shorts
found It difficult to cover. As a result
tho quotation advanced sharply. Cam
br!n, steel moved higher In sympathy, and
the meet optimistic talk was heard on
nil the steel stocks.
As the day progressed new Issues canto
to tho fore. Pennsylvania Steel pre
ferred rose rapidly after an Initial point,
ucclne to S3,' m'dvlng up to 86, while1
J, G. Drill soared over S points. Lehigh
Valley Transit became buoyant and
Cramp Shipbuilding advanced 4 points on
a. single al
Special reason for the rise In Penn
sylvania Steel was fouml In tho announce
ment of the placing of nn order by tho
weatlnghouso Electric Company for 4000
tons ot t '.4-Inch rounds for tho making of
rifle bnrrcls.
Ualdwln Locomotive Jumped 3 points
and fclcctrlc Storage Battery gained
nnu its -mucn. i.aite superior, not
to bo outdone, also hardened. Not
only nre these Issues being stimulated Ty
wnr orders, from abroad, but nlso by tho
evident trend toward greater armament
In this country, ' whlclt .means big de
mands from our own Oovci'liment. There
Is always the possibility of some of the
European belligerents going bankrupt,
but no such fear Is to bo entertained re
garding homo "war orders," and the
traders, realizing this, appear to have
taken a fresh hold on tho securities of
the companies Involved, and aie predict
ing much higher prices for a number ot
tho leaders. Tho traction shares were not
effected bj (h.o commlsslon'3 approval of
the extcn?iv'o transit facilities. The only
limitation Imposed was In reference to
those portlo'nrf of the projett for which
me city nas not J'et presented plans.
Dapld Transit ruled a fraction Hbova lost
week's close.
Philadelphia Company movSd up a
point, aided by tho' -better reJWts or
earnings of all the various subsidiaries.
For Instance, whllo a few months ago
tho receipts of . the United Railroads
of San FrancUco were showing de
clines of from J10M lo J1S00 a day, as
compared with the preceding year, th
property Is now reporting sains of from
JtOOO to S1200 a day in gross receipts. Tho
change for the better In the lust Jl.t
months has been quite remarkable In tho
Pittsburgh district. This group of prop
erties Is ,now showing gains In total net
earnings .of over $120,000' a month, equal
to 3W per cent, a year oi jhc outstanding
Philadelphia qompany common stock.
Along Willi the heavy Increase In the
Industrial consumption of gas nnd eleo
trlclty, there hns been a gain of close
which means much, os these commodities
which means much of these commodities
for domestic use nre sold at much higher
prices than for industrial use.
