KNITTING FAD OF THE WINTER
IS CONTINUED AT THE SEASHORE
Sweaters and Scarfs of Brilliant Hue for Milady of Fashion
Are Made by Her Own Nimble Fingers.
Vacation Doings.
ATLANTIC CITY, July 30.
WHEN the summer girl relaxes after
hor morning dip In tho surf nnd
comes forth to form an Interesting group
on one of thb piers or perchance the
hotol or cottage piazza in the afternoon
she knits or crochets. Embroidery seems
to havo lost its hold. Knitting came Into
vogue last winter, whon everybody
worked so Industriously making scarfs
for tho soldier boys, and It was found to
bo a very useful accomplishment. Many
ot tho girls wearing tho smartest woolen
sweaters .will tell you with considerable
pride they knit them themselves. Indeed,
knitting has proved so fascinating that
some Industrious girls have made three
or four modish top coverings of the beau
tiful pastel yarns. Canary color la n
general favorite. A girl on the Steel
Pier this afternoon was uomg soma mei
crocheting for a bedspread, which sho
confessed was for her "hope chest." She
proudly exhibited to an, admiring group
a set of throe Initials which were to bo
inset in heavy linen across the bolster.
For the centre she was crocheting a large
square medallion, in which Dan Cupid
was scattering blossoms about.
Her method of crocheting was Identical
with tho tidies our grandmothers used to
knit for the backs of sofas and thoso
"comfy" armchairs, all of which brings to
mind that very old, moss-grown saying,
"There Is nothing new under the sun."
Two brldgo parties were held In fashion
able Chelsea this week. The centre of In
tcrest was tho all-day fote held at Kenton
Hall, Belmont avenue and the beach, for
the benefit of All Saints' Church, on Wed
nesday. The lower exchange was dotted
with gayly decorated booths adorned with
iimmnr blooms. There wus keen rivalry
as to which booth would take In the most
money at the end of the day, and every
one worked with might nnd main to raise
tho desired 12000. which will probably bo
mode up by subscriptions If the profits of
the sale do not quite reach that amount.

TIUYM0RE FRIDAY CirATS
ALTITUDE AT THE EDGE bf THE SEA
In 1775 a party of Britishers went to Bunker Hill. Tho Mon
ument record that they were unwelcome visitors. The pinnacle
of tho Traymore is one foot higher than Bunker Hill Monument,
but English guests are welcome, Indeed they will Ana
something to recall their "right little, tight little Island." The
upper promenades of the Traymore have an altitude above se.
level, with a sheer drop into tho water, like those famous cliffs of
Tintagel in Cornwall, or Land's End. God made the Cornish rocks
with volcanic fire, and man made the Traymore with brains and
machinery; but from the summits of both ono can hear the eternal
voice of the wind singing to the orchestration of the waves "LoJ
Freedom on her atarry heights, Of course you must
have n big soul to take it oil 4n, But the Traymore was built to
express tho soul of man's bigness ,amld the boundlessness of sea,
sky and- sunshine. You can't dwell with these things wllhatU
feeling big and free,
