Wide advances occurred In a number
of loent Industrial stocks today. During
the early trading active demand devel
oped for Cambria Steel, the quotation
advancing a substantial frnctlbn. Inter
ests close to tho management pre
dicted that cash dividends would be
resumed next week, but that the rats
would remain unchanged. Incidentally
It was asserted that the present six
months of the flscat year would prove
Ihe best In the company's history. All
Ihe steel shares were strong at the local
board,-. Pennsylvania Stoel preferred ris
ing six points and United States, Steel
also bolus In demand. Heavy buying of
HcsBenior pig Iron was reported at a 25
cent advance In price. It was predicted
that tho demand for Bessemer and basic
pig Iron would lift tho whole pig Iron
market to considerably higher levels.
Baldwin Locomotive common estab
lished the customary now high record
ngnln this morning, nnd there was also
some Inquiry for tho prcforred. Senti
ment of tho trading clement was dis
tinctly optimistic, and was reflected In
bids for stock oxchango Beats, $3000 being
olfered whllo the asking prlco was $1000.
As the day progressed ' tho traders
turned their attention to Cramp Ship
building and tho price was quickly run
up from 67Vi, last night's close, to C9.
Meantlmo J. 3. Brill Jumped from 31 to
0Vi, despito a statement Issued by an offi
cer of tho company that the plant was only
operating nt GO per cent, capacity nnd
that It wns not true that tho company
was devoting Itself chiefly to working on
war orders of wagons and carriages for
tho European nrmtes. Ho ndded that the
company Is holding tho remainder of Its
capacity In readiness for regular car
business when tho rnllronds begin to buy
more equipment. Mnny Inquiries havo

An unusual development In tho short-tcrm-noto
field Is tho fact that the
Bethlehem Steel Company and tho Du
Ponts have been Investing their large
surplus funds In this class of security
to such nn extent of lato that tho market
has virtually been cleaned up.

figures for Juno 1, 19. Loans expanded
nearly ten millions, whllo deposits were

effect of tho writing down of securities
valuations tho last year. In this con
nection it Is noted that the trust com
panies' surplus and undivided profits
show a decrease as compared with a
year ago, tho total of that Item being
