The Dailu Story
At the Station
The last of the arriving passengers had
trouped through the station. Some few
seated themselves In the comfortable
chairs to await trains from other direc
tions, but most of them had passed on
to the street.
Jim Burden turned from tho door nnd
crossed the room to tho street exit.
"Not on this train?" asked tho kind-ly-fnced
matron, who had noticed him
at two earlier trains. Jim shook his
head.
"I guess there's been some trouble." he
said. 'She's delayed along tho line nnd
she can't telegraph me, you see, because
she don't know what my address Is I
come up Tuesday from New Mexico with
a load of cnttlo I Jest wroto her to come
on ahead and I'd meet her at the train
no matter when It came In. Been looktn'

"There nre lots of peopio who miss their
friends," was tho sympathetic response.
"That girl over In the chair has been
here more than 21 hours. She Is to meet
her father hero nnd will not leave tho
station for fear that he may come and
she will mlssTilm "
"Be all rlg-nt If I talked to hor." he
asked ' .Mrtybe a man would have more

The matron Bhrujjged her shoulders.
"You mlBht scare her," Bhe smiled, "but
perhaps jou could do some good."
Burden lumbered across the room, paln
fullv self-conscious Tho girl looked up
with a flash of hope In her pretty eyes,
but their glance changed to a loon of pa
thetic rcslBnntlon when she saw that It
wns not her father. Jim awkwardly took
olf his hat
"I Bot a proposition to mako," he be
gan, puinslnB Into tho matter without
preamble "I'vo been talking to that
lady. Indicating tho matron, "and she
sas you're In pretty much the same
box as myself "
"You nro expecting friends, too?"
"A girl," he said simply. "You see I

and I'vo got to wait. Now you tell mo
what your pa looks llko and go over to
the hotel and get somo sleep In a real

"You are very kind," she snld, blush

The search was fruitless, but at the sup
