Four Philadelphia Women Victorious
in Delaware State Event.
COUNTRY CLUB. Wilmington, Del.,
June U. Philadelphia was well repre
sented In tho Delaware lawn tepnls cham
pionship for women which began hero
this afternoon, and unless a surprise Is
sprung the title should fall to a Phila

On account. of her showing In the na

Fox Is greatly fancied, and It would not
be at all surprising If she should pull
through. Of the first four matches

four games In the first set and two in
the second. Miss G, Osthelmer, Hunting
don Valley, had matters all her own way
In the first set of her match with Miss
M. Thompson, of Wilmington and won by
six games to none, but In the second set
Miss Thompson Improved wonderfully and
23 games were played before Miss
Osthelmer could claim the set.
Miss Evelyn Itunh, Merlon, and Miss
Alice Patterson, Philadelphia Cricket
Club, put up an excellent exhibition, and
although Miss Patterson was beaten in
straight sets, 6-3; 7-J, she put up a much
better fight tnan tne score reauy inui

Philadelphia Counrty Club, gained the

In sheer disappointment when he saw

Tho bleachers were solid white, except

TENNIS TITLE AFFAIR
Athletics right from tho start. From all
parts of the field they kept up a verbal
r.Utlo of basoball small talk.
Not to leave you up In tho air about
thoso two men on base, It may be said
that Veach ended his tcum's chances to
score by popping the pill Into the air,
and when It came down Barry was wait
ing for it.
Thompson was not In evldenco when
play started today, and they do say ho
has been sent to Richmond to help Mr.
Dunn with his team. Davles, broken for
the time being of his main fault, which
Is his belief that ho Is a pitcher, was In
centre field.
Tho emery ball discussion came up at
the start of the second inning, and the
ump at tho plate examined the entire
stock in hjind to see if anybody wanted
to give up JW).
This amount Is the fine for using tho
emery ball.
Apparently there was nothing to It,
however, because play wns resumed. And
Joe Bush got a great hand from the
crowd when ho threw himself out at
full length and stopped Kavanaugh's
whistling grounder.
Mclnnls pullod the star play of the
Inning, however. Ho had to go Into tho
air for Barry's throw to get Young. The
latter was almost at the bag wi.cn Mc
lnnls stopped the ball, but Instead of
trying to touch the 'bag, Stuffy tagged
the runner as he descended, retiring the
side.
Strunk and Schang started what looked
like a batting rally in the A's balf of
tho second, each getting a slnglo after
Mclnnls had gone out. Strunk went to
third on tho throw in of Malone's fly to
right, but Kopf was out at first. It was
not a rally.
