COTTON
NEW YOUK, June 12.-Cotton opened
steady this morning, two points lower to
three points higher. This was better
than had been looked for on the cable,
which came only two points higher,
whereas advances of 24 to 6 points had
been expected. There was no special
feature to the trading here.
The close waa quiet and rather heavy,
with about a two-point average decline.

THE MARKE
CRAMP SHIPBUILDING
CONTINUED TO CLIMB
New High Record Established.
Steel Shares Influenced by
Rumors of Deal.
Cramps Shipbuilding shares continued
to climb Into new high territory this
morning on the Philadelphia Stock Ex
change, Jumping another four points be
fore the first half hour's trading had
been completed. Later some of this gain
waa lost The feeling that tho stock
was very closely held and knowledge that
tho big block owned by the Cramp es
tate, which has been overhanging the
market for some time, had been disposed
of naturally rendered It ensy for the
traders to mark up the price, being ably
seconded by the New York Curb fra
ternity. Confirmation of the report of a $6,000,000
Itusslan order for Baldwin's sent the
prlco up n couple of polntB. Tho ordor
wns for SCO locomotives and not war mu
nitions nm! should prove a substantial
basis for the company's business during
tho coming months.
At the opening Pennsylvania Btcol pre
fcrrod Jumped from 54, last night's close,
to CO, but with President Felton's denial
of any deal the price reacted to 58. No
(trent amount of stock came out Cam
bria was moro active, and after rising 1(4
to par, ensod off a fraction. The Asphalt
shares and Philadelphia Electric wcro
other strong spots.
Tho constant reiteration of the old
rumor of a merger of the Pennsylvania
nnd Cambria Steel Companies is growing
monotonous. A dispatch from Pitts
burgh giving so called details set tho
Streot agog for a time, but prompt de
nials wcro forthcoming from official
sources. An Interest close to both man
agements said today that nothing in this
lino wns to be expected until tho Su
premo Court had definitely passed upon
tho status of tho United States Steel
Corporation.
Lnke Superior wns less In the limelight
today and showed signs of profit taking.
The remainder of tho market ruled quiet
except for a show of strength In United
States Steel following tho upblddlng of
tho stock In Wall street. Tho unexpected
ly heavy Increase In unfilled tonnage con
tinues to be a factor In the buying of
stool, and there Is every prospect that
the next report will show a very much
larger gain. Some go so far as to pre
dict an Increase of 600,000 tons in unfilled
orders. Tho big corporation Is now oper
ating slightly above SO per cent, of ca
pacity. Local Bid and Asked

NOVEL METHOD OF FINANCING
FRENCH WAR REQUIREMENTS
To Borrow From Our Banks, With
American Securities as Collntcral.
MEW YOUK, Juno 12. A simple scheme
for financing French war requirements
is being worked out by bankers In Now
York and Paris. The Idea Is to Induce
French holders of American securities
to exchange them for renen war oonos,
which will bo iBsucd for tho purpose.
The American securities will then bo sent
here, and will be hypothecated with the
banks, the proceeds going to pay for war
munitions bought here.
A cnble dispatch from Paris said that
tho group of French bankers in charge
of tho scheme is planning to Bell tho
Amerlcnn securities here, but such Is
not the understanding of leading New
York bankers, who say that if these
American securities were to be dumped
on the New York market to be sold the
American market would be unfavorably
affected. Tho plan Is to borrow money
from American banks, putting up the
French owned American securities as
collateral. The money will be used to
pay obligations contracted here.

GRAINS UtllEGULAli
IN CHICAGO MARKET
Crop Reportfl of We6K Favor
ableIndia's Exports MUch
Larger
CUICAQO, June Il-Ther was a little
buying at the opening of the grain pit
today and prices started a fraction or et
above yesterday's elose. Traders, how
ever, did not show a disposition to do
very much, and sales were mostly of an
evening-up character. July wheat Tr&s
quoted at $L09, Up ; and September
$1.06, Just n cent higher.
Selling pressure developed later and
prices reacted. September fell to $t04H
and July eased off to $L07.
At the close July recovered to $LCT4.
while September1 ended the day Unchanra
from the opening.
The declining tendency of the gfaln
nmrket dtiring the last week, which car
ried some prloee to new low levels tor the
year, refleoted the brilliant crop promise.
The Government report, which cam
out during the week, showed a total Pf
676,000,000 bushels of winter wheat and
274,000,000 bushels of spring wheat, a total
of KO.OOO.OOO bushels. This surpasses last
year's yield by a round CO.O04.009 huiriels.
That tales of the Insect ravage were
overdrawn, as against the less excitable
reports of the railroads operating through
the wheat belt. Is denoted by the fact
that winter wheat loss In May Is now
figured at only 17,000,000 bushels or 2.5
per cent Wheat generally improved dur
Ing tho week, and the continued wet and
cool weather appears to have further re.
duced the opportunity for damage by In
sect pests. Harvesting Is under way lh
the southern limits of the belt, and the
crop Is heading further north and In the
far West, where It Is reported as bttnc
In splendid condition.
The exporting of wheat from India, ac
cording to advices from London, will not
be financed In tho usual way by the driw.
Ing and negotiating ot bills ot exchange
on London, but by the Government Of In
dia placing at the service of agent firms
necessary funds of Its own, thus avoid
ing flnanclnl transactions between Eng
land and India.
The Iatter's exports of wheat last week
were 2,608,000 bushels, compared with
1,800,000 bushels the week before, making
that source of export supply rank third
In International trade in wheat, and to
taling 20,800,000 bushels thus far this sea
son.
