AMERICAN NOTE TO GERMANY CREATED A "
STOCKS CONTINUED
UPWARD MOVEMENT
New York Stock Sales
Last clew. Hllh. Low. C!o.
Leap in Reading New High
for Bethlehem $5,000,000
Additional Gold Imported,
NEW TOHK, June ll.-Encouraged by
the mild and friendly tone of the note of
the United States to Germany, the stock
market made further upward progress
during the early session on the exchange
today, with the war specialties nncl me
coppers again lending the way, ns has
been the custom here of late, while the
established shares lagged as far as
activity waa concerned, but were strong
In sympathy with the general trend.
There were more buying orders than for
come days past, and the demand came
from nil parts of the room, Some Issues
made gains ranging up to 5 points.
Tho .market received whnt has nlways
been considered the established test of
strength the regaining of dividends
which had been taken off nt the opening.
Dividends on the copper shares were
clipped off, but these wcro nil recovered
In short order and prices In this group
went substantially nbovo tho final of yes
terday. Again, today, tho supply of
Mocks on the market was smnll, and
any demand Immediately resulted In
bidding up of the price. Although out
side Interest Is still Insignificant, n dis
position Is being shown to come In,
arid thin Is more particularly evident In
tho war specialties. After tho early ac
tivity trading slackened down, but prices
remained firm.
Demand for stocks became larger In the
afternoon and further gains wero made,
the standard shares coming Into promi
nence, Heading lending this group with
an advance of more than threo points,
while Steel Common added 174 to Its price.
Tho supply of both of these stocks ap
peared to bo particularly small Through
out the afternoon interest switched from
tho specialties to tho railroads to a great
extent. Of tho metal stocks, Federal
Mining showed tho greatest strength, the
common moving up 10 points nnd the
preferred nearly 9 points. Tho closing
was strong.
The Street tins become more or less ac
customed to Bethlehem Steel making
new high records dnlly, and tho stock
did not disappoint any one on this score
today, selling up to 1C3V4, Just IVi above
tho previous high and five points above
tho close nf yesterday. General Electric
moved up the same amount, but neither
held all of Its gain.
Tho character of the note to Germany
was an agreeable surprise. It had been
almost generally expected that It would
bo very drastic, which was helped along
by the resignation of Secretary Bryan.
Tho noto proved to bo nothing of tho
kind, and while reasserting our demands
set forth In the first note, It does so In
a very friendly way. That the differences
between thn two Governments can be
settled In n very satisfactory way with
out resource to force was the general
belief alter a careful rending of the note.
The mild tenor of the note raised the
question In not a few quarters of "What
did Bryan sec In It to cause him to re
sign?" The Btreet could not see why.
From Canada there was received an
other shipment of gold, amounting to 15,
000,000, which brings the Imports of the
yellow metal from nil sources since Jan
uary up to 193,015,000. Yesterday $2,600,000
In gold was brought In from Ottawa.
The foreign exchange market was un
affected, rateB remaining unchanged. The
price of copper metal continued to rlqe,
electrolytic for foreign delivery being
quoted at 20J4 cents, while for domestic
consumption It was 20W down to 20V4.

LOCAL IRON AND STEEL
TRADE SHOWS IMPROVEMENT
Export Orders a Factor Cotton Busi
ness Stagnant.
According to tho weekly review of trade
conditions In Philadelphia by It. G. Dun
& Co., local cotton and cotton yarn deal
ers report a stagnation In their business
during the past week. There have been
but few deliveries, but collections are
satisfactory and show an Improvement
over the previous two or threo weeks.
While prices are still low, there Is but
little future Inquiry and the yarn Is being
old at present mostly to manufacturers
of hosiery nnd knit underwear. Weaving,
upholstery and carp"et yarns are exceed
ingly dull. No change Is anticipated until
about August, when manufacturers are
expected to buy for their fall and winter
trade.
Local wool dealers report business very
quiet, although there has been an In
creased firmness In the wool market
This Is attributed more to the Increased
values In the growing district than to any
enlargement of the demand. Inquiry Is
mostly for foreign wools, which ore com
paratively cheaper than the domestic
products. A number of large mills which
have received further orders for wnr sup
plies are consuming largo quantities of
the medium and low-grade South Ameri
can wools, and have now nearly cleaned
up Eastern markets on these descriptions
and prices continue strong. In the Ter
ritories considerable of the clip has been
cleaned up, but In the fleece districts
growers' Ideas of vnlue are as a rule so
largely In excess of the buyers' that the
amount of orders placed Is small.
The Iron and steel market hue shown
somewhat more activity during the last
week and orders are reported to have In
creased, Tonnage, however, continues
to be rather moderate and mainly for
Immediate requirements, though in some
lines It has been somewhat Increased by
railroad buylngv Orders for export con
tlnue a prominent factor of the situation
and plants manufacturing the game re
port a large amount of business on "nana.
The finished material business is well
maintained, and somewhat more active
buying Is noted for shipyards and loco
motive builders. Prices are reported rea.
sonably firm and collections show a slight
Improvement.
