SOUNDLY DEFEATED
barely Has Expert Been I
Beaten 6 Up and 5 to Play. J
Marston Is Victor in Jersey
KSSEX COUNTY COUNTnY CL.UU,
West Orange, N. J.. juno ll.-Rarely has
Oswald Klrkby met with such a defeat
as fell to his lot today In tho second elimi
nation round ot the Now Jersey State
golf championship at the Essex County
Country Club. The champion was beaten
by Maxwell n. Marston, of Baltusrol,
Up and 3 to play.
A now champion will be crowned this
year In. any event, for, besides the put
ting out of Klrkby, Max H. Behr. of
Baltusrol, who won the title here several
yeais ago, was almost as easily beaten
by Hoy D. Webb, ot Englewood. tho
medal winner. The margin was 6 and 4.
Marston not only played fine golf, as
shown by his medal round of 71, but ho
caught Klrkby oft his guard. Tho Cham
plon drovo well enough; In fact, held his
opponent nicely oft the tee, but Marston,
usually uncertain at tho shorter game,
was distinctly en his mettle.
Marston wont along very steadily nnd
took the lead at tho third hole. Then he
recorded a line three In the fourth for
another win. He became three up at tho
eighth, when Klrby was green shy, and
onco more, on the ninth. Klrby could not
cope with tho superior approaching of
Marston. Thus the Baltusrol man was
4 up at tho turn.
The long, up-hill tenth was another
credit to Marston, who played It well
enough for a win, and he presented Klrby
with the eleventh by driving out of
bounds. Klrby got a fine threo there,
winning the next two holes. Marston
settled tho match. For the purpose of
seeing what Marston could do, the bye
holes were played, and the card follows

Behr was no match for Webb at any
stage of the round. The Baltusrol man
took the first hole, but Webb camo back
strong nnd took the next three holes in
succession. lie was 4 up at the eighth,
but Behr took the ninth In 4 to 6 when
Webb half topped his tee shot.
Taking the 10th and 13th holes Webb
became dormle, and a half at tho Uth
settled the match.

CHAMPIONSHIP
PENN BALL TEAM
AT SHIBE PARK
Real Summer Heat Greets Ath
letics, Indians, Emory Tit
man and Others.
8HIDE PARK. Philadelphia, Juno ll
Thcrc was real heat at Shlbe Park to
day. It's great dope for pitchers and
other ball players, but It was sort of hard
on Emory Tltman. He wasn't around,
marceling as Is his wont.
The Perm tonm laying off for tho day
In preparation for tho tlft with Harvard
tomorrow turned out to see how It Is dono.
They should have been up yesterday
when the Indians pulled some first-class
Inside college stuff.
Bressler slabbed for the Macks, while
Fohl's choice was Morton, the boy whom
Trls Speaker has sponsored as having
more stuff than any one since Addlo
Joss.
Southworth took Lelbold's place at cen
tre. None of tho cripplos lined up for
the A's.
Thoy should all be back soon, however,
when Mnck gets ready to spring the
trick from up his sleeve. The Indians
shook down a scare for tho fans with a
near run in the first. Southworth popped,
but Turner cracked out a nice single, later
stealing second. Chapman fouled out,
nnd Wood banged a wicked drive to
Kopf who couldn't handle It. He re
covered, however, and winged Turner tit
tho plate.
Bressler lost hold a 'bit In the second.
Granley dead-headed to first, and Smith
sacrificed. The Wambsganss person got
one on his elbow, and there wero two on
base with one down. O'Nell was out on
a long fly. Mr. Morton chipped some Ice
for his own game by a two-bagger on n.
drive that wns too much for Barry.
Southworth beat out a grounder. Maione
then pulled a peach when he Intercepted
Lapp's throw to second on Southworth's
attempted steal, and Morton wns run
down between third and home. It was
a world's series play on Malone's part.
Southworth more than proved the last
half of his name In the third when he
made a one-hand catch of Strunk's ap
parently sure three-bagger. Right off the
ground he got It and It took a triple som
ersault to stop him afterward. As nice
a catch as was ever made In the field
suburbs. Southworth came from the
American Association and his patron
saint is Jack Knight.
