Not In many weeks has the financial
community witnessed such a spectacular
opening as that of this morning. Long
before the gong sounded brokers' ofTlces
were crowded nnd the telephones wcro
busy with orders. Some of tho more
consennllve houses, In fact, requested
their customers to limit their orders until
tho initial bulge had culminated. Of
course, United States Steel was the storm
centre here as In New York, but there
were 0 number of other nctho spots. In
cluding Heading. Lehigh Valley, Cambria
Strel, Lake Superior nnd Ciamps' Ship
building The latter jumped over 5 points
to a new high record for the present
mo ement.
Urolters nrgucd thnt the strength of
Cramp stock was entirely legitimate,
1 olntlng out that the demand for con
uruuion of ships is unprecedented
and thnt manj companies are lilted up
fur two j ears or more, and are unablo
to bid for additional lnmlnrnH Aim. tlm
highest prices In cars aro being pnld
for vessels The Cramps aic In a very
satisfactory position In tho latter part
of 1914 and enrly In 1315 tho company
took llttlo business It would not bid
for work then offered at low prices.
Owing to this policy It has been able to
close largo contracts at prices away
above what they wero a few months
nso, and the margin of pioOt will be
lnrge.
A bulge of two points In Baldwin
Locomotive followed tho report tint an
arrangement had been made with tho
Remington Arms Company to participate
In a largo rifle contract. This business Is
said to be the causo of tho erection of tho
new buildings at Kddystone.
Tho Street wns Interested In another
court decision besides thnt In the United
States Steel suit This was the decree
regarding tho Keystone Watch Case
Company. Tho court llnds tho compnny
hnd unlawfully restrained trade In viola
tion of tho Sherman anti-trust act provi
sion relative to tho boycott. This viola
tion wns In the form of a letter sent out
by the company under date of January 15,
iaiu. -j.no ciccreo enjoins tho company
from further attempts to restrain trade
by that means, nnd gives tho Government
tho right to take action If the compnny
tries to violate the decree. Tho other
parti of tho decree conform with tho de
cision handed down recently, In which
tho court dismissed tho Government's
dissolution proceedings.
Ono Imnortnnt result of tlm nnl ,i.
clslon may bo the carrying out of long
delayed plans looking toward a consoli
dation of some of tho big steel concerns,
notably tho Cambria nnd Pennsylvania
Steel Companies. H. C. Frlck, who Is
commonly regarded as tho largest mi
nority holder of Cambria stock. Is said
to havo an option on tho Pennsylvania
Stool stock, held by tho Pennsylvania
Hallroad. It Is said n merger of theso
two companies would havo been effected
long ago but for tho United States Steel
