TEN-POINT JUMP IN
BETHLEHEM STEEL
83 Per Cent, of Missouri Pacific
Notes, luaiurniK j.uuuy, uu-
, posited for Extension.
NEW YOHIC, June L An was to be
expected, In 'view of the over-hotdlday
developments, the principal thing being the
German reply to the noto of rresldent
WlUon, which as regarded as distinctly
unsatisfactory and evasive, the stock
market opened tower today". There was
no preisure to cell and the liquidation
that appeared was very orderly, and
aU In the market acted very calmly. The
Initial losses were not largo and with
few exceptions were confined to fractions,
and they were small bb a rule.
Tho Street had not expected a, very
conciliatory reply from Germany, nnd
bo was not surprised by tho nature of It.
It had not been expected, however, that
the answer would bo nn evasive one, and
because of Its naturo some quarters re
carded the International situation aa very
acute Thero wns nn underground feci
trig however, that the differences be
tween the two Governments would fin
ally he adjusted without anything serious
occurring. That a vigorous reply should
be sent to the Kaiser's Government
seemed to be the general sentiment.
The market throughout tho early ses
sion was a waiting one. Virtually nil In
terest was centered on Washington for
the result of the Cabinet meeting, which
all members attended, nnd where two
things tho German noto and tho Mexican
situation wcro probably the two princi
pal topics of discussion. The noto to
Mexico has been prepared, It Is said, and
will probably be given out for publication
In th6 newspapers tomorrow.
After tho Cabinet meeting It was an
nounced that tho reply of President Wil
son to the German noto had been ap
proved, as had tho noto to Mexico, nnd
that the latter would bo given out at
10 o'clock tomorrow morning
Moro than J20.750.000. or 83 per cent of
the (25,000,000 6 per cent, notes of tho
Missouri-Pacific, have been deposited for
extension for one year. Tho company's
directors were In session for the greater
part of tho day, waiting, for tho re
mainder of the notes to come In, so that
they could declare the plan operative,
and pay the coupons or commission. Tho
company's stock was strong during tho
morning, but lost somo of the gain at
the end of tho day.
After tho early declines there wns a
good demand for stocks and tho market
became steady, but dull at the lower
levels. Most of tho buylnu orders had
been placed at prlco limits under Satur
day's close and sellers were compelled
o reach their bids. Nearly all of the
supply came from tho room traders At
one time Steel common was 1 down,
but It regained sonic of Its loss. Union
Pacific, selling ex-dlvldend, was off a
full point Bethlehem Steel lost 2 be
fore midday.
Throughout the afternoon thero was no
change In the dull conditions which ruled
during the latter pnrt of tho morning ses
sion, although tho market developed a
somewhat firmer tendency. News that
tho Interborough Metropolitan plan had
been declared effective caused strength in
both classes of the company's stock.
Thero wns a vigorous bidding up of
Bethlehem Steel In the last fow minutes
and that stock rose 10 points from the
,low. Crucible Steel also moved up over a
J point, while several other shares regained
their day's losses. -
In the line of routine news tho report
of the Government on the condition of
cotton wns the most Important. On May
3 It was 80 per cent of ,ormal, just 6.7
per cent above the same date last year.
It was also 0.5 above the 10-year average.
Crop reports were In tho main, favorable,
Snow's estimate, for Instance, placing tho
winter wheat crop at 669,000,000 bushols,
against 6S3.000.000 a year ago; spring
wheat. 2Sl,0O0,O00 bushels, an increase of
tl.400,000, oats Indicated crop; 1,277,000.000
bushels.

War Time Investments
During periods of uncer

to keep their funds liquid
and at the same time take
full advantage of the attrac

sound securities unusual con

cause of this attitude on the
part of investors many of
the strongest corporations
have issued short-time notes
