Thero was little to discuss In tho day's
dealings on tho Philadelphia Stock Ex
change. On tho whole tho tendency was
downward, but declines wero confined
to fractions, being1 chiefly duo to eve
nlnir up of commitments In anticipation
of tho holiday. United States Steel, I.e
high Navigation, Cambria Steel, Pennsyl
vania, Tonopah Uelmont nnd Union
Traction all cased ott moderately, but
In no case wero offerings notably ex
tensive. Cramp nnd llaldwln shares
failed to nppcar on tho tape.
In tho final dealings tho arbitrage group
stiffened under tho lead of United States
Steel, which recovered Its earlier loss.
Tho close was dull and steady, with small
gains in Lnko Superior nnd llulTalo nnd
Susquehanna. Tho narrowness of tho
market waa Illustrated by tho day's total
sales, which wero only about 3300 shares,
compared with more than 12,300 last
Saturday.
Notwithstanding n very encouraging
April, leport of earnings Reading wns de
pressed. Tho railway returns more than
mado up for losses of tho coal nnd iron
company, which showed a surplus of only
$101,618, against $222.a0S a year ago. Tho
Heading Company gross earnings In
creased $1020 nnd the net gain was JM3.
Tho surplus for the month was $02,4SO,
against J77.007 In 1911. From July 1 tho
surplus was $03.1,110, compared with $S96,
020 for tho samo period Inst year. April
was tho ilrBt month ot tho current fiscal
year ot tho Philadelphia and llending
Hallway In which tho total operating rev
onuo showed an Increase ovor tho cor
responding month of tho previous year.
Each of the procedlng nlno months, be
ginning with July, 1914, had resulted In
gross earnings of lesser amount than In
the year ended June SO, 1914. The April
increneo amounts to only $21,300, but It
Is considered ns a turning point for tho
better in the road's business For tho 10
months ended April 30 of the current year
tho railway gross Is more than $J3,CO0,0O0
bohlntl tho corresponding period of the
fiscal year 1913-14, so, of course, thero
will be a largo decrease for this year,
oven If tho business In May and Juno
continues to Improve.

PAN-AMERICANS OUTLINE
BETTER TRANSPORTATION
Improved Facilities for Shipping. and
Financing Crops Proposed.
WASHINGTON, Jlay ID.-Effectlve and
permanent transportation facilities and
two corporations to finance crops and
public works for the Central nnd South
American republics were proposed In
committee reports today at the final ses
sions of tho Tan-American financial con
ference. Tho transportation problem was
presented by tho Committee on Transpor
tation and Communication, which sug
gested that bids be called for not later
than December 31, 1916, for a .regular lino '
of fast mall steamships between tho
United States and Hlo do Janeiro, Monte
video and Buenos Alies.
Tho crop financing plan provides a bank
especially fitted to carry short-time loans,
handle agricultural credits and finance
the output of the Central American and
contiguous countries. It would specialize
In loans to planters nnd producers.
Tho public works corporation would
handle railroad building, public buildings
nnd other public Improvements. This
ponccrn should have a capital of $10,000,000,
mostly raised in the United States.
