Like many artists, Charles Chaplin con
ceived his present characterization
through a combination of scores of other
types and Impersonations. He went Into
the English music halls and gave imita
tions of great stare, finding that his bur
lesnue wmk found the greater response.
From audollle ho started on his way to
fame In America when "Fred" Karno en
gaged him for the music hnll sketch "A
Night In an English Music Hall "
This sketch with Sir. Chaplin and a
large company was brought to tho Vic
toria Theatre by Oscar Hammerstcln In
1305. Later It was placed over the Keith
circuit. Sir. Chaplin was not "featured"
ln the company, but his acting attracted
ths attention of Slack Sennett, ono of
the pioneer motion picturo producers and
directors.
Sir. Sennett made his start as n come
dian and picturo director with the Bio
graph. Ono of his associates directing in
that firm was D. W. Griffith.
It didn't tako Sir. Sennett lone to seo
tho possibilities. In "Charlie" Chaplin,
who was a pantomlmlst of high order.
Mr, Chaplin went Wst to tho Kcystono
studios at Los Angeles and started to
nork. The combination of Scnnott as
director and Chaplin as comedian proved
a winning one.
As "Charlie's" fame grew so did his

Betty Nansen, rcc Mm star, has re
ceived word that she Is to be decorated
by King Kaakon, of Norway, for artistic
merit. This will be the third time that
Madame Nansen has been the recipient
of orders from kings. She Is already
the possessor of gold medals from the
late King Frederick VIII of Denmark
and King Oscar of Sweden.
