LONDON STOCK MARKET
LONDON, Mny 23. Thero was no fea-
turo to securities on tho stock exchaneu
today. Deallub'a wero small. In tho gilt-eiltfc-il
sections tho tone was hard. New
Colonial scrips advunced again on buy.
Inff by Investors. Hesitation was shown
in home rails, which wero dull and mixed.
South Africans were irregular but gen
erally higher. Canadians and South
American rails wero quiet. Foreigners
and mines did not show much activity,
but were tlrm.
Tho Great Central Hallway Company Is
preparing to issue 600,000 3V4 per cent,
debenturo bonds, There has been a good
deal of criticism because tho Treasury
will not allow Binall emissions of capital
by existing companies. This forces ap
propriations from tho revenue and re
duces capital values. Tho stock exchange
has received messages of approval and
congratulations from the whole country
for last Friday's vote for Lord Kitch
ener.

A foreign trade bnlanco of $1,000,000,004

with tho oxports at tho present rate,
which show a Inrge gain from week to
week over tho Imports, will exceed the
bllllon-iiollnr mark within the next two
months, nt kn.it, if present conditions
In our foreign trade continue.
Already the balance stands at (900,000,000,
According; to the announcement made by
Secretary nedflold at the Cabinet meet
ing: In Washington today. Tho 800,0OO,OOO
will be reached and exceeded tomorrow,
tho Secretary said. Tho balance In favcr

SPRING WHEAT THRIVES
IN "DISKED" CORN GROUND
Depn.rtm.ont of Agriculture Gives Ro
sults of Experiments.
WASHINGTON. May 23.-Dlsked corn
ground Is tho most profitable for raising
spring wheat In the Great l'lalnanrea,
tho Department of Agriculture totlav
stated In announcing the results of ox
pcrlmenta made at II stations. Climatic
conditions also are a great factor. It wad
found.
Kxtcnslvo tests at the stations show
that there was practically no gain In
ylold on the ground that waa fall plowed,
following corn and oats, over ground
which waa plowed In the spring. The
small difference In cost of tho two meth
ods of preparing tho land makes the rela
tive profits nnd losses from them follow
closely tho differences In yields.
"The greatest profit per acre at those
stations whero It has been possible to
rnlsc whent nt n profit was mado on
disked corn ground," says tho report
"This was made possible by the con
sistently high yields together with the
low cost of preparing tho land for wheat.
Of course the realization of these profits
depends to a certain extent on the suc
cessful growth of corn na fi general arm
crop In competition with other crops.
It also should bo kept In mind that at
nil tho stations tho corn land was koptv
