Tho Philadelphia market ended the
week with an outburst of buoyancy. The
volume of trading during the brief two
hours it remained open for business to
day' was greater than had been ehown
at any time during the past few sessions.
The chief leaders In tho upward Jump
were Cramp Shipbuilding shares, United
States Steel nnd Baldwin Locomotive, tho
two local l&sUes continuing to climb Into
new high territory for tho present awing.
Lake Superior, too, camo to life and
moved up n, Bubstantlnl fraction, whllo
United States Ktecl followed Itn upward
course In Wall street. Tho strength of
all these Industrial Issues as usual found
Its origin In the huge war orders com
ing to hand, The first hour galnB were
not maintained to tho close in some In
stances, Baldwins having risen from 49
to 61, closod unchanged.
The General Asphalt group also became
buoyant, both the common and preferred
ndvanclhg more than a point each. The
grcntly Improved outlook In trade, es
pecially In the steel business, has restored
to a certain extent a feeling of optimism
financial circles dcsplto tho Lusltanla
complication. Taking steel mill operations
In April at 70 per cent, of capacity about
10 per cent, went Into direct exports or
machinery, etc., to bo exported, and about
6 per cent, went to rallrondH, leaving
domestic business outside the railroads,
at about 65 per cent, of tho total. Ex
ports promlso to take IS per cent, or
more In future, and a llltlo mora railroad
buying would give 15 per cent, for tho
railroads. If the other domestlo demand
engaged 60 per cent. Instead of 65 per
cent., tho steel Industry would find em
ployment for 00 per cent, of Its capacity.
In fact, somo men In tho steel trade nro
confidently predicting that by August 1
tho mills will bo operating at as heavy a
rato as labor conditions permit.
In contrast to this tho anthracite trado
Is slack nnd a drastic program of curtail
ment Is bolng put Into operation by tho
leading hard coal companies. The Lehigh
Valley Coal Company, taking tho lead,
has suspended operations for nn Indefi
nite period and the small dealers nro ap
parently stocked up to tho full limit of
their storage capacity.

CHICAGO, May 22. Tho grain market
moved erratically today. TMere has been
a pronounced waiting attitude on the: part
of England, in vfsiv of expedted large
American crop, but recent developments
and widespread reports on tho damaged
wheat In this country has caused appre
hension in the United Kingdom. Tho
European demand for wheat has sud
denly broadened, with bidding more
freely.
May wheat opened with nn advance Of
156, reaching as high as 167, but slow trad
ing and holding out by commission houses
caused a drop to U.MVi. at which price it
closed, a loss of 1H for the day.
July wheat showed a tendency to re
main nt the Increased opening figure of
129, and tho price at one time crolned
130. The finish was (1.27H, a decline of
from yesterday's final.
A recent snowfall In Illinois has
caused considerable damage to the wheat
crop of that State. The report of wheat
badly Infested with fly and chinch .bugs
has effected an appreciable buying of
wheat.
The acreage to wheat In four counties
of Illinois Is reported a total failure,
Minneapolis stocks of wheat decreased
100,000 bushels for one day, against -125,000
bushels of last year.
Buenos Aires reports lighter arrivals
for shipment as holders are 'Arm, Moat
of the reserves have been shipped or ar
ranged for and the less favorable reports
from America have caused pronounced
firmness there.
Sentiment in corn and oats was mixed.
A sensational situation In wheat has de
veloped In the Northwest. Minneapolis
mills bought 1,600,000 bushels of cash
wheat nt Duluth yesterday, cleaning up
the avallablo supply of wheat remaining
unsold at tho head of tho Lakes. Ex
port business yesterday was small. No
sales wero reported from the seaboard.
Seaboard demand for oats for foreign
Bhlpment was In evidence.
